Free agent Luke Scott has agreed to sign a one-year contract with an option for 2013 with the Tampa Bay Rays, the club announced Thursday. The deal will pay Scott $5 million in '12 and the option for '13 is worth $6 million with a $1 million buyout.

Scott, 33, played in just 64 games last season as he was battling a torn labrum in his shoulder. He's undergone surgery to fix the issue and should be ready to go come spring training. If he's not, this deal won't happen, as it is still pending a physical.

Scott was actually a pretty underrated power hitter prior to injury. In 2010, he hit .284/.368/.535 -- good for a 144 OPS-plus -- with 27 homers, 72 RBI and 29 doubles in just 131 games in 2010. He hit 75 total home runs from 2008-10 for the Orioles after going to Baltimore in the Miguel Tejada trade.

Where Scott fits on the Rays remains to be seen. He can play left field, first base or serve as the designated hitter. The Rays are set in the outfield with Desmond Jennings, B.J. Upton and Matt Joyce, but still appear to have possible holes at first and DH. Scott can fill either of those voids, with DH being much more likely.

Versitile Luke Scott?  He is good with a gun & knife hunting...playing defense, not so much.  Hitting LHP...not too much.  But hey it`s the cheapskate Devil Rays signing someone so hoo-rays!!!!  I`d rather have a washed up Vlad at $5,000,000 with 2 year option.
I`m sure manager Maddon will have Scott`s personality there to help, hopefully no hotfoots or amputations.

Luke Scott signs with Rays

Hey dheal, those of us that know something about baseball know that a players value isn't tied to HR per AB.  He hit .167 against lefties last year, and .240 against lefties in 2010.  Perhaps he doesn't get 550 ABs because his manager doesn't want a guy that hits sub-.250 in the lineup?  I know the Orioles can't bench ALL of their bad hitters at once...

Not sure if the Rays can afford Damon at DH now since 5 million is what Damon will need.

Luke Scott to sign with Rays

Here we go. Another baseball fan that has no clue what he is talking about. In 2010 Luke hit 1 HR every 16.5 At Bats and vs LEFTIES he hit 7 out of 100 At Bats. That means he hit 1 HR out of every 14 At Bats. So where is your argument? Where do you get your facts? How do you justify saying that Luke is horrendous against lefties. When Barry Bonds hit 73 Homeruns In a Juiced Season he hit 1 every 9 and the NL MVP Ryan Braun hit 1 out of every 19 at bats In a juiced season. Braun and Bonds had well over 600 at bats. Luke hit 27 with 450 At Bats. Can you imagine How many he would hit with 600 plus, plus he hit. 284. This guy never gets a chance. Give him 550 at bats and he drops 35 guaranteed. On top of that you call him a whack job. He just says what everyone thinks!!! The difference is he don't care what people think. Maybe you should think before you start bashing someone and most importantly get your facts straight.

Report: Luke Scott to sign with Rays

Luke Scott had some upsides...he could hit for power but only vs righties. his production vs lefties was horrendous. Scott was oft injured and was a slight wack job. I hope he does well in Tampa and can get a fresh start with a winning franchise.

Let's face it ... Scott is streaky, and showed some flashes with the Orioles, but was not a contributing factor to a winning team.  He does have value and can swing the stick under the right circumstances (he is healthy, it is a night game, facing a right-handed pitcher).  It is a shame the O's get nothing in return.

He tore his labia?  That explains a great deal of the O's hysterocal issues.
