Hiroki KurodaBy C. Trent Rosecrans

The Yankees have rebuilt their rotation in one night, not only trading for Michael Pineda, but also agreeing to a one-year deal with right-hander Hiroki Kuroda worth "around" $10 million,'s Jon Heyman reports.

Yankees' big night

Kuroda, 36, was 13-16 with a 3.07 ERA for the Dodgers last season. In four seasons in Los Angeles, Kuroda was 41-46 with a 3.46 ERA.

Kuroda pitched 202 innings in 32 starts for the Dodgers last season, striking 161 batters and walking 49, as his win-loss record took a major hit by bad run support from his teammates.  At one point he lost 10 of 11 decisions despite putting up a 3.12 ERA and holding opponents to just a .244 batting average.

This argument is very misleading.  All-Star first basemen including Tex have stated that while Jeter doesn't have the range of some in the game, he is better than average.  AND, the ones he does get to, he doesn't throw away like so many shortstops.  That in itself is very important.  They also rate him near the top in starting/turning double-plays.

Yankees add Kuroda to rotation

The Yankees are now the front runners to win the American League and the Mariners are the biggest loser and just solidfied last place in the AL West.  Getting Kuroda and Pineda is an amazing turn of events that no one expected and they got both of them for basically nothing.  Yes, Jesus Montero can hit but he cant catch so getting a future Cy Young award finalist for possibly the next decade for a guy that is going to be a designated hitter in a huge park was an absolutely rediculous trade that left Mariners fans dumbfounded.  This also creates two other big problems for the Mariners.  First, getting rid of Pineda single handedly just took them out of the Prince Fielder sweepstakes because they now have a first basemen (Justin Smoak) and a DH (Jesus Montero), not to mention there is nothing but money bringing him there because the Mariners are going to be subpar.  Second, there is no reason for Felix Hernandez to want to stay in Seattle other than money.  He did get a large contract but there is nothing stopping him from waiving the no trade clause.  Great trade for the Yankees and getting Kuroda will push them past both the Red Sox and the Rays because they now have 2-3 guys that can shut a team out on any given night.

On paper a good pickup and a good price.  NL West pitcher going to AL East worries me.  Coulnd't be any worse than Weaver.
If you are going from the NL West to AL East and pitching for the Yankees it's not so bad. Kuroda has good control and doesn't give up a lot of home runs, but the question is who is going to field all the many ground balls to the left side of the infield. At some point the Yankees need to get a capable shortstop.
