Joel ZumayaBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Oft-injured fireballer Joel Zumaya has agreed to a deal with the Twins,'s Jason Beck reports. Zumaya will have a base salary of $800,000, but could earn as much as $1.7 million with incentives. While pending a physical, the agreement is for a big-league deal, sources tell

Zumaya, 27, hasn't pitched in a game since 2010 when he left the game after a fracturing his right, pitching, elbow on a pitch in June of that year. Zumaya threw in spring training last year, but had another surgery to help aid his elbow injury after feeling pain.

Before getting hurt, Zumaya appeared to regain his form from his rookie season in 2006 when he struck out 97 batters in 83 1/3 inning and helped lead the Tigers to the World Series.

When he's healthy, Zumaya can be an intimidating force out of the bullpen, topping 100 mph. But injuries have derailed his career.

Twins take a chance on Joel Zumaya

I hope Joel makes a full recovery from his previous injuries and has a successful year. I wish the best for him. He was awesome with the tigers when he was not injured in those early years. I hope it works Joel.

Low Risk

Risking only $800k on a twenty-seven year old reliever who was once one of the best, Joel Zumaya represents a good chance for Terry Ryan to look like a genius.

And if he busts, Ryan can just pick the first candidate in line from the Twins' fabled farm system.  What?  Time for my medication?  OK.

Great move by the Twins.  I hope Zumaya can stay healthy and get his heater back into the 97-100 mph range.  May not be possible at this point, but something close will help the Twins pen a great deal.  Zumaya at 800-thousand is a MUCH better deal than Nathan at 7.25-Million.  Sorry Joe, I'll take the deal that the Twins "settled" with anyday and twice on Sunday.  Now, the Twins need a LH Power hitter at either 1B or DH, as Morneau is NOT going to be THAT guy anytime soon if ever again.  A good #2 or #3 SP would really help too, hopefully someone is willing to deal one for some prospects since the Free Agent market cupboard is bare this season.  The Twins have a LONG road back to contending, but if ANY team has the proven track record in MLB to do it, it's the Twins.

Twins take a chance on Joel Zumaya

I wish Zumaya the best, I really do.  Before injuries killed him the guy looked like he was going to become a dominating closer or at the very least a dominating setup man.  I'll never forget how stupid he made the Yankees look in 2006, helping us get to the world series.

Great pickup by the Twins, that's for sure.  Picking up a talented kid for 800 grand is a great move.... I'm surprised the Tigers didn't give him a chance for that kind of money.

These are the type of guys the Twins find and do well with.  He will help the bullpen.  They need to find a starter and get a whole season out of the M and M boys.  The will miss Cuddy, but this is good start to filling out the roster.
