Reds sign Ryan Ludwick to one-year deal

By Matt Snyder

The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to sign free agent outfielder Ryan Ludwick, confirms Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The move, which is pending a physical, was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Heyman reports the deal is for $2.5 million with $500,000 worth of incentives included.

Ludwick, 33, hit just .237/.310/.363 last season with 13 homers and 75 RBI, but the majority of his plate appearances came in Petco Park, which is death to power hitters. He hit .218 with only five home runs and a dreadful .658 OPS in 212 plate appearances at Petco. And as we all know, Great American Ball Park is a hitters' park. So this move should help him.

Ludwick was an All-Star with St. Louis in 2008, slugging 37 homers and driving home 113 runs. Yes, he had the benefit of hitting in a lineup with Albert Pujols, but the Reds can surround him with the likes of Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Brandon Phillips. Ludwick hasn't had another season anywhere close to being as good as 2008, but he was a productive offensive player throughout his Cardinals career. His return to the NL Central -- he was traded to the Pirates last July -- didn't go well, but it was a small sample of 113 plate appearances.

Expect Ludwick to get the overwhelming majority of the playing time in left field -- at least out of the gate -- with Chris Heisey serving as the fourth outfielder and Drew Stubbs in center.

Though the offseason started rather slowly, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has added Mat Latos, Sean Marshall, Ryan Madson and Ludwick to his ballclub in the past several weeks in an attempt to get the 2010 NL Central champs back into contention.

We all know Heisey should get the chance, with Ludwick as the 4th wheel, but given Dusty's record with Heisey I expect we see a platoon again with Ludwick getting the most starts.  Fire Dusty's butt if that happens.

I also like Heisey and think he should get a chance in LF but its nice to have an insurance policy in Ludwick. I think Heisey's high K ratio scares the Reds mgmt. The Stubbs, Bruce, and Heisey OF may break K records. I know we've all been saying it but Stubbs cannot have 200 Ks again and expect to stick around as a lead off hitter.

Not my top choice, but given GABP, this could possibly (not guaranteed) benefit the Reds big time. Time will tell, but I'm excited to have Ryan Ludwick on the squad.

BigKatz: a little know fact (this is true). Drew Stubbs doesn't bunt much because he is deathly afraid of getting hit with the pitch while bunting. True story.

Jim Bowden has to be smiling somewhere at this one. In Bowden's days under Marge Schitt, the Reds were good at trolling the free agent pool with little money to spend, signing guys like Ron Gant, Pete Harnisch, Pete Schourek and retreads who were looking for another chance. Today, the same Great American Ball Park that is totally unfair to pitchers for a team that can't attract good free agent (starting) pitchers so they have to trade 1/2 of their top prospects for a San Diego born-and-bred pitcher.... now get Ludwick who hopes to fatten his stats in a bandbox of a ball park. Ironic.

This is a good signing for the Reds

Riegert8,

This could be a good siging for the Reds if (and this is a big if) Dusty Baker doesn't get locked onto what he did in 2008 and run him out everyday regardless of how he does this year. I would like to See Chris get the nod in LF with Ludwick as a backup plan. My biggest hope for the Reds tis year is tat they invite Wade Boggs to camp to teach Drew Stubbs how to bunt. I think Duty should go "Major League" on him and make him do 20 push-ups every time he its the ball in the air.

I agree.  To give Ludwick the majority of starts right out of the gates is somewhat of a slap in the face to Heisey.  Maybe not the $12.5MM slap in the face like Phillips got, but a smack in the face, nonetheless.

Personally, I'd rather see Heisey out there everyday than this guy who I feel is on the downside of his career.  Heisey put up decent numbers last year and could provide significantly more productivity over the course of a full season of playing time.  I think he deserves the chance
