Braun to make speech at BBWAA dinner Saturday

Ryan BraunBy C. Trent Rosecrans

National League MVP Ryan Braun will appear at this Saturday's Baseball Writers Association of America dinner, as CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reported earlier this month. But the question remains if he'll say anything regarding his positive drug test last season?

Braun's spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik, told the New York Times on Wednesday that Braun would show up, accept the award and make a short speech.

However, Braun, who hasn't made any public statements since news broke that he'd failed the drug test in October, isn't expected to do any interviews.

Braun, and other winners of the BBWAA awards, are expected to attend the dinner. It seems unlikely that he will address the failed test before his appeal is ruled upon by MLB.

Braun and his representatives have steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, while admitting the positive drug test.

"It's very much the same reason we can't take the Home Run title from Barry Bonds"

WVU_93, its nothing like the same reason, Barry Bonds never failed a drug test. Teamates and trainers might try to throw him under the bus, but thats not the same as actually failing a test. Its called proof, not speculation

"Truth is we live in the age of sports where we don't know who all the cheaters are"

Truth is players are getting caught left and right because of random drug tests, this statement may be half true, cause we are slowly finders out exactly who the cheaters are. A few players may luck out and play their entire career without getting caught, but eventually most of them will

I can't believe how nieve people are.  This guy tested positive to illegal and banned substances.  He can say anything he wants about not knowing, not caring, or whatever other BS he wants to offer up.  Bottom line is he broke a rule of the game and by doing that, it unfairly benefitted him and his team.  He cheated.  He shouldn't be given any awards and should be fined and banned from the game.  Why do we insist on giving guys an option of saying they didn't know what they were putting into their bodies?  It's no excuse!  If we excuse that, you may as well allow HGH, steroids and everything else, because every guy that gets caught using the stuff just makes the same excuse of not knowing what they have been taking.  Even if he is honest in saying that he didn't know, he still got a tremendous advantage over all of the players who don't chear.  Why do we bother watching a game where some of the guys cheat?  How can anyone defend this guy?

Just another "tainted" record in MLB.  Which the last time I checked was supposed to be a time honored game.  I don't think any of the current HR records should be allowed to stand, they all cheated and in my opinion disgraced the game of baseball.  Bonds, McQuire, Sosa, just to name a few.  All are phonies and non of their stats should be of record.  I still say that this award and title should go to the next highest vote getter behind Braun.

The only thing I've seen recently in regards to respecting the integrity of the game was the Phillies this year playing in the final season series with the Braves. The Phillies didn't need to win any of those games, but went out and played the regulars and swept the series.  Instead of Cards fans talking trash to the Phillies about beating them in the NLDS, they should be thanking the hell out of the Phillies for allowing their team to back into the play-offs.

I know everyone has the same initial reaction, he tested positive for banned substances so give the award to someone else.  Truth is we live in the age of sports where we don't know who all the cheaters are, the next three people in the voting may have been doing the same thing and just didn't get caught.  It's very much the same reason we can't take the Home Run title from Barry Bonds, we don't know what skeletons are next to come out of the closet.  At this stage we can only put an asterisk next to any accomplishment like this so people 50 years from now can understand what the numbers mean.  Braun should keep his speech short and sweet and not as a platform to defend himself, you took something without consulting a team trainer that caused a positive test, live with it, be thankful appreciative and sit down.
Does this mean we can no longer give speeding tickets to those that are actually caught speeding because someone somewhere may be speeding and is not getting caught?  Sorry, but this is the craziest reasoning I can imagine, and you are not the first to say it. We should ignore what we absolutely know to be true because there may be something out there that we do not know.  Ridiculous!  The guy cheated and everyone knows it, but baseball, as usual, is rewarding the cheaters.  What else is new, other than the reason for supporting the cheaters.

I just love these Double standards from people that absolutely ripped previous players accused. It is amazing what being considered(REGARDLESS OF FACT) a good guy can do for you. All of a sudden his Horror matters, don't talk about the CHEATING good guy. Give me a break, either we rip all of them, or we just leave them alone. I personally don't care, however I don't like how people get carried away on one person then say it is ok for another person because he is a good character person.

P.S. Just because someone can smile and is cool to have a Beer with doesn't mean he is a good guy, or better than anyone else!
