Ryan BraunBy C. Trent Rosecrans

National League MVP Ryan Braun will appear at this Saturday's Baseball Writers Association of America dinner, as CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reported earlier this month. But the question remains if he'll say anything regarding his positive drug test last season?

Braun's spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik, told the New York Times on Wednesday that Braun would show up, accept the award and make a short speech.

However, Braun, who hasn't made any public statements since news broke that he'd failed the drug test in October, isn't expected to do any interviews.

Braun, and other winners of the BBWAA awards, are expected to attend the dinner. It seems unlikely that he will address the failed test before his appeal is ruled upon by MLB.

Braun and his representatives have steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, while admitting the positive drug test.

I am guessing that the only people who know what you take to treat herpes are either people who have herpes, or a doctor. So which one are you?
Gee you are so clever!  The answer, though, is "neither"...what I am is a college educated man with a professional degree and the ability to use a computer to research basic medical facts.  Feel free to show me if I have missed a recognized medical source that says "treat herpes with massive doses of synthetic testosterone" genius.

I think it would be wise for Braun not to comment until there is a full hearing. If he has taken any form of drugs for medical reasons then he should admit as to why that is at the hearing but should not accept any awards until it is sorted.

It would be wrong to make a speech until the outcome is known

I think everyone is missing the point of this drug test.  It's not about the result or the rule, but the fact this is in the media at this stage of the process.  Where is the outrage for that?

There's a law called HIPPA, and I won't claim to be a legal expert but the law protects the privacy of a persons' medical records.  If any one of you reading have had something done - dental, doctor, etc. your personal medical records are protected by this law from being distributed to anyone outside of the realm of your treatment.  It is a federal crime to distribute your medical records to anyone, especially the MEDIA!

Ryan Braun had an incomplete drug sceening process, and a potential (and personal) medical issue contributing to the result.  If his records were exposed for either one of these, it is a crime.  For both is simply scary.

As people have said before, sports is just a game (and one we place way too much emphasis on as a society).  But how would you feel if your doctor told the local newspaper you had a heart condition, early onset of alzheimers, or an STD.  You probably wouldn't like that too much and would sue for damages.  Now imagine if you had millions of dollars on the line as a result.  This is wrong...

Keep your eye on the ball.  Regardless of the result, this is a personal rights and privacy violation and media anonimity is not a cover.

OK let's take this from another point of view. Suppose I am a ball player who has a disease which requires me to take a drug which is against the drug policy. And suppose I am honest and let my team bosses know about this. So then if the policy can't be amended, I take another drug (and there are zillions of substitutes).

Now I would look at Ryan Braun, and say to myself, why does he get away with it, and I can't because I am honest? The fact is, even if it is so that Braun needs this drug to stay alive, he needs to let his team know that he is taking it. He can't just ignore the policy, and trust that he will get by because he always has before. And he can't expect sympathy because it is a prescribed drug. And as I said, I don't think Braun is stupid, he is a cheater trying to run between the raindrops.

Does anyone on this site know the cure diabetes or cancer? How about herpes, AIDS or Mad Cow Disease? Opps, this is a sports site and not a medical site.  Let me guess, everyone on this site knows the difference between, and the multiple uses of, the numerous different steroids, PED's, synthetic testosterones, or even the non-synthetic testerones that our bodies produce. Do you know that the medical world is using blood pressure medication to help prevent migranines when a patient has no history of blood pressure problems. They use multiple different steroids in the treatment of asthma, alergic reactions and many other ailments. I wonder what the medical world might use these days in the treatment of testicular cancer, male breast cancer, herpes, infertility or any other medical problem this world might come up with. To all you chuckleheads out there that think this world revolves around sports, you should get a life and attempt to put yourself in someones shoes who does have a medical problem. If Braun took something to knowingly gain and advantage, then he deserves everything he gets including being stripped of the MVP and being called a cheater. If he did something to protect himself against a curveball life has thrown him... well, he broke a rule be he isn't a cheater! There is HUGE difference. Only he and the big man upstairs know his real intentions. Even though we may never know the real truth till sometime down the road, if his real intentions were to protect himself, I hope the haters rot. As for the answer to the first part of this post: There isn't a cure! Ask my dad, may he RIP.

Although it is disturbing that Ryan Braun tested positive for using illegal substances and that the test results were made public the most unfortunate thing is that it is not Matt Kemp that is accepting this award...Shame on the writers for this one....perhaps it shouldnt be an mvp award but a best player award...regardless of whether your team makes the playoffs or not.

"The same folks who went after Bonds want to give Braun a break. Hmmm, what could be the difference, hmmmmmm."

Not true. They are both cheaters, and both deserve what they get. Same with A-Rod, MacGwire, etc. They are all hated by many people for cheating the game.

"That doesn't set off alarms for you?"

No. Perhaps it is because he didn't have a big head, etc, he thought he could get away with it. And I guess he does!
