Starting pitcher Yu Darvish has agreed to terms with the Texas Rangers, sources have told CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman. Heyman has also learned the contract is for six years and $60 million. The Rangers paid a reported $51.7 million simply for the right to negotiate with Darvish.

More Darvish coverage
Darvish, a 25-year-old right-hander, has been the ace of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters for five years. In those five seasons, Darvish is 76-28 with a sparkling 1.72 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He's struck out 9.5 batters per nine innings and walked just 1.9 per nine. He's also thrown 50 complete games and 15 shutouts. In 2011, Darvish went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 276 strikeouts in 232 innings with 10 complete games and six shutouts.

The $51.7 million posting fee will be paid by the Rangers to the Fighters. Had the Rangers been unable to come to terms, they would have kept said fee.

Darvish will join Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz and probably Matt Harrison in the Rangers' rotation while Scott Feldman and Alexi Ogando are likely ticketed for the bullpen -- but still could emerge as starting options if need be -- in front of Mike Adams and Joe Nathan.

So at $18.6 Million per year....Where does that land Yu on the MLB Pitcher pay scale....I'd say...the Rangers definitly over paid for this guy....he will have to go every 5 days...were in Japan he threw basically 1 time per week.  He will be facing Albert Pujols and MLB hitters not below average Japanese hitters.

The Rangers want to win now and they were desperate so they overpaid...in 4-5 years...this deal will look even worse....simply because a #3-#4 starter in the majors will not be worth $18+ million a year....

I can say that CC resign doesnt seem so much at 24.4Mil/year when a team is going to pay 18.5Mil/year for a rookie, with 61 mil basically up front. All these guys are overpaid now. AL West is looking like a much stronger division as the off season gets closer to the end.

Totally agree. Wilson was Arrogant, and a playoff choker. The Angels will find this out soon enough if they ever make the playoffs again. The fact the Rangers never even made Wilson an offer should tell you all you need to know about CJ. He is not a team guy, he is a ME guy. He did not deserve to be on the Rangers, who probably have the best clubhouse chemistry in Baseball, if not all sports. The humility of Michael Young, Josh Hamilton, Kinsler, Cruz, Napoli, Beltre...Darvish, from all accounts, will fit right in here, while CJ tweets about himself in Angel-Land. Nolan and Jon boy have been around the block. I trust them, and letting CJ walk without even an offer says it all. We want humble winners, not alibi whiners. Now, about Fielder...:-)

Paying stupid money to Wilson (on the wrong side of 30) would have been foolish.
Giving the money to Darvish coming into his prime makes a lot of sense to me.
I like the deal. Nothing is a sure thing, but it's a good gamble.

Most people outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth don't realize that CJ is also a bit of an arrogant prick - he thinks very highly of himself. I'm sure that helped Nolan Ryan let him go.

There have been succesful Japanese pitchers in the majors before. Nomo was high in the Cy Young voting in '95 and '96 eventually winning 123 games. And Matsuzaka had a stellar 2008 campaign winning 18 games.
