Darvish, Rangers agree to six-year contract

Starting pitcher Yu Darvish has agreed to terms with the Texas Rangers, sources have told CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman. Heyman has also learned the contract is for six years and $60 million. The Rangers paid a reported $51.7 million simply for the right to negotiate with Darvish.

More Darvish coverage
Darvish, a 25-year-old right-hander, has been the ace of the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters for five years. In those five seasons, Darvish is 76-28 with a sparkling 1.72 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. He's struck out 9.5 batters per nine innings and walked just 1.9 per nine. He's also thrown 50 complete games and 15 shutouts. In 2011, Darvish went 18-6 with a 1.44 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 276 strikeouts in 232 innings with 10 complete games and six shutouts.

The $51.7 million posting fee will be paid by the Rangers to the Fighters. Had the Rangers been unable to come to terms, they would have kept said fee.

Darvish will join Colby Lewis, Derek Holland, Neftali Feliz and probably Matt Harrison in the Rangers' rotation while Scott Feldman and Alexi Ogando are likely ticketed for the bullpen -- but still could emerge as starting options if need be -- in front of Mike Adams and Joe Nathan.

Darvish will sign, likely six year deal

This current Rangers organization has done nothing that should make their fans worried about this.  When a team makes nothing but incredible decisions for several years, you need to put a little faith in them that they know what they are doing.

The Rangers were nly talking to Fielder in case the Darvish deal feel through. No, they cannot sign them both. Would but their Luxury Tax numer at over $100,000,000. Not going to happen unles they were to trade Hamilton and kinsler.

It's a tradition that dates back to the origins of baseball in Japan post WWII. Americans brought it there so it's in English. Some teams do use Japanese letters on their jerseys and they have all kinds of variants nowadays just like here.

While I dislike Nolan Ryan, I just don't understand this signing at all. Didn't anybody learn from the Dice K fiasco? His posting fee and contract are almost identical to what's being proposed here- and he was considered a stronger ML prospect. 100 mil for 6 yrs. He gave them one good season, one excellent season and the last three seasons have been dogs for the contract and the amortized posting fee. 49 wins for 100 mil does not sound like a bargain to me. I do understand the concerns about shoring up the staff and about trying to cover what the Angels have done- but 100 mil is a lot of bank even in MLB.

Why do Nippon Pro Baseball teams have english-language lettering on their jerseys? I cannot think of a reason why they wouldn't use the native japanese language. If anyone knows, please reply with an answer, as it puzzles me.

I like the Rangers, always have, until Oct when they play the Yankees.  Nolan shold know everything about pitching and arm fatigue that there is so I'm not really concerned with his innings pitched while in Japan, although is it really high for someone only 25.  But with this signing, and possibly Fielder too, I guess that could leave Hamilton out in the cold somewhere when he's looking for the big pay day too.  WS twice in a row now with nothing to show for it, seems like thy're going all out this year, see you in Oct again.

I don't see this staff as weak.  In fact it has the potential to be very good!

I hope we still take a shot at Fielder, we need to match the Angels signings of Pujols and Wilson.
