Unfortunately, the news keeps getting worse when it comes to the cancerous tumors in Hall of Famer Gary Carter's brain. The most recent news is "extremely grave," per the New York Daily News. Carter fell violently enough on Christmas Day to tear his rotator cuff and the most recent MRI has revealed even more spots and tumors, according to Carter's daughter (on their family website).

What's worse, Carter doesn't sound like he's optimistic at all.

"I'm not feeling too good," he told New York Daily News a few weeks ago. "It's been coming on and coming on. I've had a chest cold. I've got sores in my mouth, blood clots. I get sick ... there's just so many things ... It's been nine months now and I don't feel any different from Day One. I haven't been up to doing any interviews."

Finally, the worst news of all is that the Daily News is reporting that doctors are considering no further treatment.

Dang!  You hate hearing such awful news about one of your childhood heroes.  I wish him only the best and hope he receives some comfort through this terrible time.

Gary Carter's health worsens

An insane Reds' fan as a kid, I hated Carter ... which is to say I really thought a lot of and truly respected his abilities.  Hate to hear this about him ... it's an insidious disease.  Praying the Lord blesses him with a miracle.

Gary is one of the classiest and most adored human beings that ever walked the face of the earth.  May he rest in peace.

Grew up a Phillies fan, therefore, not shockingly, was not a Expos/Mets fan in any way. Having said that, Gary was a great player, role model, and human being. As a father now of 4 kids, I can point to this man as an example of how a player and person should act. Thanks, Gary, for all the years of competitive memories against the Phils.

Gary Carter's health worsens

It's tragic to hear about heroes, whether yours or someone else's, having to deal with such a terrible disease.  More than a sports icon he is a human being with a family who is grieving.  My heart aches for Gary Carter and his family as he faces his mortality.  May he find peace and pass without pain.
