Gary Carter's health worsens

Unfortunately, the news keeps getting worse when it comes to the cancerous tumors in Hall of Famer Gary Carter's brain. The most recent news is "extremely grave," per the New York Daily News. Carter fell violently enough on Christmas Day to tear his rotator cuff and the most recent MRI has revealed even more spots and tumors, according to Carter's daughter (on their family website).

What's worse, Carter doesn't sound like he's optimistic at all.

"I'm not feeling too good," he told New York Daily News a few weeks ago. "It's been coming on and coming on. I've had a chest cold. I've got sores in my mouth, blood clots. I get sick ... there's just so many things ... It's been nine months now and I don't feel any different from Day One. I haven't been up to doing any interviews."

Finally, the worst news of all is that the Daily News is reporting that doctors are considering no further treatment.

Gary Carter's health worsens

Very sad to hear that he is going through so much suffering at the end.  This is not a good way to go -  He has had a wonderful life that is being cut short way too soon.  I can honestly say I hated the Mets teams he played on.  But you couldn't hate Gary Carter.  He was just not hatable.  He just seemed like agood guy, and by all accounts he was.  He was such a huge part of baseball at a time (pre steroids, pre- strike) when the game seemed bigger and better.  asn't it Carter that scored the winning run on Buckner's error?  It doesn't get any bigger than that moment in baseball history - I still remeber the smile -

Gary Carter's health worsens

I am a lifelong Red Sox fan and even more of a fan of Gary Carter. Great player and an all around class act. This sounds like the end and I hope that its not but no matter what I wish him and his family the best. I lost my dad this past August to cancer and understand what they are going through. Again, I wish them the best.

A great catcher. One of the top five catchers of all time. And one of the best men on that 1986 Mets team. Not just a leader, but an example on how to live life, as a man of faith and of principles who never imposed and yet was held as a giant by everyone who played with him. 57 is too young for a Kid. God bless.

the KID, one of my boyhood idols w my beloved 86 metss. i recently heard the horrific news. keep fighting Gary, remember game 6 of the World Series, a single started it all....you can conquer anything. My fondest memory was opening day walk off homer to win for the Mets> and who can forget the walk off win vs the Astros in game 5. everyone talks of the famous 16 inning game, if it wasnt for you the Mets dont win it 7.. You and Keith were the heart and soul of the most memorable team ever.... i would have loved to meet you and never got a chance...my next wish is for the Mets to honorably retire #8...you deserve it and to be healthy.....stay strong KID.....love you

Gary Carter's health worsens

So sad to hear this news.  Carter was an amazing baseball player.  It's looking like Gary C. is in his final hours.  If this is your time Mr. Carter, may God take you with Him.  Thank you for all the memories you provided as an elite catcher.

All the best to you, Gary.  Never a big Mets' fan, but always respectful of your effort and hustle.  You are a great contributor the the great American game of baseball.  May you find peace.  Much respect.

Jesus.......horrible.  I was huge fan of that Mets team that won it all.  I did played catcher my entire life all the way into the minors and have always been a big fan of the guy.

R.I.P.  Gary.......catchers of your quality are few and far between these days.

I am a huge Mets fan, and loved the way he played the game, I wish the best for his family in this time of crises, and hope his suffering is as minimal as possible. I'm devastated, Gary Carter, you were and are a legend.
