Carlos Pena

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Carlos Pena is returning to the Rays, CBSSports.com Insider Jon Heyman reports. Pena will make $7.25 million from the one-year deal, according to Heyman. Pena made $10 million from the Cubs last year in what agent Scott Boras called a "pillow contract," which would allow him to have a big year at Wrigley Field and then sign a multi-year deal this winter. That didn't happen.

FREE AGENT TRACKER

Pena, 33, hit .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs for the Cubs last season. He hit just .196 in 2010 for the Rays, but slugged 28 homers and actually had an OPS+ of 103 despite his low batting average.

Pena played for the Rays from 2007-2010, hitting .238/.368/.516 with 144 home runs in his four seasons with the Rays, finishing ninth in MVP voting in his first two seasons with the Rays and making the All-Star team in 2009.

Last season Casey Kotchman was the Rays first baseman, and while he hit .306/.378/.422 for Tampa Bay last season, he had just 10 home runs. The addition of Pena would add extra pop to the Rays' lineup over the free-agent Kotchman.

Heyman noted the Indians were interested in both Pena and Kotchman. With Pena off the board, Cleveland would be a logical landing spot for Kotchman.

Carlos Pena agrees to re-join Rays

I would MUCH rather try to re-sign Casey Kotchman over Pena. Here are a couple reasons why....

Age - Kotchman = 29   -  Pena = 34

Career Fielding % - Casey Kotchman = .998%   -
;Carlos Pena = .994%

Carlos Pena = 319 K's last 2 seasons   -  Casey Kotchman = 289 K's in his 8 year career

Kotchman has 33 more hits over the past 3 seasons

Not a good addition in my opinion

WELCOME HOME PENA!!! Hated to see you go, and now happy you are back!! Now it's time to pick out some seats for season tickets!!  I hope the fans appreciate what Freidman has done this year, and we still may not be finished.  We have a solid arm that can be traded to upgrade at shorstop, but if not I think the right moves have been made.  They really got a boost in the power department! WTG Rays!! Get those cowbells ready!!

Carlos Pena in 'serious' talks to re-join Rays

His defense alone is worth $2m. I'm expecting 12/2 or a 7-8/1 + team options for 2nd year (with a buyout).

I hope Pena does go to Tampa, and for as much money as he can get. He didn't overwhelm with the Cubs last year, but I thought it was a solid singing. His D, and his overall attitude was a joy to watch.

Come on Rays don't get to cheap, sign Pena, and all of a sudden the middle of our lineup is sick with the addition of Scott and Pena. The starting lineup could look something like this:

Desmond Jennings
BJ Upton
Evan Longoria
Carlos Pena
Ben Zobrist
Luke Scott
Matt Joyce
Sean Rodriguez
Catcher?

With a starting rotaion that is arguably one of the best in baseball:

David Price
James Shields
Jeremy Hellickson
Matt Moore
Jeff Nieman/Wade Davis

Another Point - Andrew if you sign Pena I will buy season tickets again!!

He hits home runs, which a lot !B do, and plays good defense, which is nice.  The rest of his game is not so great.  I wasn't all that thrilled when the Cubs threw 10 mil at him last year.  You are correct, he is a decent player if you get him on the cheap, but not much else.

Rays better be getting this low avg subpar palyer on the cheap.  No more than $2m a yr please.
