Free agent outfielder Cody Ross will sign with the Red Sox, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has confirmed. Heyman has learned the contract is for one year and $3 million.

Ross provides necessary insurance in the outfield for the Red Sox now that Carl Crawford had to undergo surgery on his wrist and is questionable for opening day. Plus, it's possible Ross ends up being the starter over Ryan Sweeney in right field anyway.

Ross, 31, hit .240/.325/.405 with 14 homers and 25 doubles last season. It marked a disappointment, as this was coming on the heels of him playing postseason hero for the 2010 World Series champion Giants.

So, yeah, not exactly impressive numbers from Ross in 2011, but Sweeney's triple slash line was .265/.346/.341 and he only hit one home run. And if Crawford isn't ready to start the season, these are the starting corner outfielders. The other alternatives at this point are Mike Aviles -- who may be splitting time at shortstop with Nick Punto -- and Darnell McDonald.

I still feel bad the sox didn't find some way to keep Josh Reddick. Why look for an bench player, when you had a kid playing well, and looking towards the future.

I am okay with this, not that my opinion matters to the front office

That's a good one for the Comparison series...Cody Ross or Ryan Sweeney. Ross gives you a little power but that's about all. Plus he's getting old. Sweeney has a decent OBP but he has no power and little speed. Neither one exactly has outfielder offensive numbers.

It seems that anything having to do with the Red Sox lately elicits comments from those without a synapse left sparking.  This little note is aimed at you.  In case you haven't been paying attention, or are in too great a mental stupor to to deduce anything, I'll make it simple for you.  The Red Sox have abandoned the myopic "WIN NOW AND AT ALL COSTS" strategy that so seldom wins anything.  Instead of raping the farm system this year, they're actully being patient.  Instead of spending all sorts of money/prospects on RF and SS they're giving Ryan Kalish a chance to show he's the guy after he comes back from injury and waiting to see what they have in Iglesias.  Instead of trying to build a team in free agency and fill in the holes with the farm system, it looks like they're willing to build the team with the farm system and fill in the holes in free agency.  Now, if this really is their strategy, then it's the right way to go.  Look at the Yankees.  They've tried to build the team in free agency, and what has it gotten them?  One stinking title.  That's it.  San Francisco has done just as well spending next to nothing.  So, it looks like they've finally gotten a clue and stopped trying to be the Yankees II (and to the Yankees' credit, maybe even they have turned a new leaf starting this year.  But I doubt it).

Uh oh Red Sawx...gaping holes at SS and now LF & RF.  Sure they can score runs in that band box, but Ryan Sweeney & Capt Cody??
On a positive note both have better throwing arms than Crawford.  Keep sifting through the FA trash bin Ben, it`s gonna be alright.

Let's try to remember everyone, Sox fans and haters alike, that this team LED MLB in runs scored last year. Your core run producing group of AGonz, Youk, Ortiz, Pedroia and Ellsbury are all going to be back. Whatever you get from the rest is gravy. I for one expect better seasons from Salty and Crawford, for different reasons. We can punt offensive numbers at two positions (SS and RF) if we get good steady defense there. We're talking about 8-9 hitters who just need to do their jobs adequately. It wasn't the O that killed us, it was pitching. We need big seasons from our starters and we'll be fine. This team completely fell apart at the end and still won 90 games.

Ross had a mediocre year last season. His post season 2010 was great but hardly a reason to cheer about him all year.

You be hating on the Red Sox....get over it.  They have a dam good team, but so do the Yankees and the Rays.  Do not trip over the idea too.  The Rangers came up short, choked....just like the Red Sox last year....you only have the window open for a few seasons....and ALL TEAMS CAME SECOND TO THE CARDINALS LAST YEAR.

I'm not feeling it for the Red Sox this year.
