The Baltimore Orioles have signed free agent infielder Wilson Betemit to a two-year contract worth $2.75 million, according to CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman. There's also a $500,000 signing bonus and a $3.25 million vesting option for the 2014 season.

Betemit began 2011 with the Royals and was then traded to the Tigers, where he hit the ball well as their most frequently started third baseman the last two months of the season. He's a journeyman, no doubt, as the Orioles will mark his seventh team in 10 seasons.

Betemit, 30, hit .285/.343/.452 with eight homers, 46 RBI and 40 runs in 359 plate appearances last season. He was terrible in the playoffs, however, and the Tigers let him walk.

Betemit can fill many different potential needs for the Orioles. Mark Reynolds is an absolute butcher at third, so the O's could use Betemit at third and DH Reynolds. Betemit could also DH himself. And if Brian Roberts doesn't recover from his concussion symptoms, Betemit is an option there, too, along with Robert Andino. Then there's strikeout machine Chris Davis at first base, who has still yet to prove he can hit major-league pitching for large samples at a time.

Simply put: Betemit will have plenty of chances to earn playing time these next two seasons in Baltimore. The only question is where he slots.

When asked if the Orioles would pursue Prince Fielder. Duquette’s answer, he
said, “Are we going to get him? I don’t know. But if we don’t get him, we’ll
look for someone just like him.” "Hey everybody look at me! I just signed Robert Andino!  He is someone just like Fielder!"

Look out for the Lowly O`s lol...Tigers add Prince, Lowly O`s Wilson Buntamit.  Love the article Reynolds an absolute butcher at 3B, IF bri Roberts ever recovers, strikeout machine Chris Davis.  The trend as always as the Lowly O`s are a pathetic franchise and have been for 15 years.  Reynolds & Davis would be great in a long drive contest or HR derby, unfortunately making contact and fielding are still required skills to succeed in MLB.  Betemit the journeyman was overrated as so many Braves prospects are.  He runs into a few at the plate and can play a couple IF positions, but face it he`s not a solid starter.  2012 another year of sub .500 basement existence in bird land.

I hope this guy puts one good season together. He was so rated in the Braves System and has not lived up to the hype.

I think this is a good signing for Baltimore.  Betermit is a decent player that should do well in Baltimore.  He strikes out a lot, but he has been able to maintain a decent average and OBP as well.  1.375 million a year for a player that can fill in at several positions and put up decent numbers is a wise move by your new GM.  Duquette should do OK for Baltimore ( so long as Jose Offerman doesn't come out of retirement).

Report: Orioles sign Wilson Betemit

honestly, the Orioles are a mess. This is a team that needs to focus on the draft and rebuild. They need to draft lots of pitching a develop a strong, if not, respectable staff. Why the heck would they sign Prince Fielder. That's taking them into the wrong direction. They thrown millions of dollars at big superstars and it has got them 4th and 5th places. Forget Fielder, and stop drafting and trading for players like Chris Davis and Mark Reynolds, strikeout machines.
Maybe the Orioles believe they could build the team around Fielder, I agree that the Orioles should not sign Fielder but used the money to get 5 good player instead of one superstar.

I don't mind on getting players that strike out an lot, but it bugged me how bad that Mark Reynolds been hitting the last 2 years.  I would think that Reynolds could hit for a higher average then .210, it great that he had hit over 30 HR a season the last 3 years.

Report: Orioles sign Wilson Betemit

The O's have been drafting pitching for years, including Dylan Bundy last year.  Between trades and drafting, they have Matusz, Arrietta, Britton, Tillman, Bergeson, Etc.  The free agents they have signed (mostly to one year deals), guys like Lee, Vladdy and journeymen pitchers at the end of their careers to tutor the youngsters: have not been big money signings.  The truth is the O's have a long history of poor front office management and lousy judgement in self assessment and development of their young talent.
Signing Duquette as a foil to Showalter is a good move.  This off season, they have concentrated on rebuilding their scouting and player development departments and their overseas scouting.  They have filled holes with players with strong minor league credentials (Davis), and jouneymen like Endy Chavez and Betemit and kept their core players (Wieters, Jones, Markakis, Hardy).  If Roberts returns healthy, That will be a huge benefit.  Reynolds has lost 20 pounds and is refocused on his opportunity to play third base, something he had done adequately in the past prior to last year.
They have some highly rated talent (Bundy, Machado, Hoes) in the minors, but at some point they are going to have to write a check to bring in a major free agent in hopes of attracting one or two others (DH, Left Field, #1 Starter) to bring this team to compete in the AL East.  If Fielder could be had for 5 Years / $100m the whole line-up gets much better.  Think Roberts (2B), Markakis (RF), Fielder (1B), Reynolds (3B), Jones (CF), Hardy (SS), Wieters (C), Davis/Reimold (DH), Chavez (LF).  Good balance of speed, power and youth.  The real question is the pitching.  Lots of potential, now lets see what comes out of Florida and heads north.

With Brian Roberts status in the air, this could turn out to be a solid signing.
