Prince Fielder signs with the Tigers

Chalk up one more for the so-called mystery team. First it was Cliff Lee going to the Phillies, then Albert Pujols heading to the Angels. Now Prince Fielder has shocked the baseball world by signing with the Detroit Tigers, a team that hadn't even been remotely connected to him in rumors the entire offseason. The robust first baseman has signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million, insider Jon Heyman has learned.

The Tigers were recently dealt what appeared to be a pretty severe blow, as Victor Martinez tore his ACL and could miss the entire 2012 season. So there went Miguel Cabrera's lineup protection, right? Think again. Owner Mike Ilitch really wants to win a World Series championship and this signing indicates one of the strongest reactions one can even imagine to news like that.

Prince to Tigers
Heyman also notes that the finalists to land Fielder were the Nationals, Tigers and one other "mystery team." So it's entirely possible the Nationals would have come away with Fielder had Martinez not torn his ACL. It's funny how things work sometimes.

A Fielder-Cabrera combo in the middle of that order will dominate AL Central pitching. Throw Justin Verlander into the mix, and the Tigers have three of baseball's biggest stars.

Fielder, 27, hit .299/.415/.566 with 38 homers, 120 RBI, 95 runs and 36 doubles last season for the NL Central champion Brewers. He finished third in MVP voting and also took home the All-Star Game MVP. Though Fielder is a large man, he is as durable as they come. He hasn't played in less than 157 games in a season since becoming a regular. He played in all 162 last season, following up seasons where he appeared in 161 and 162 games, respectively.

The smart money with Fielder and Cabrera is a split at first base, with the other serving as the designated hitter. Then again, what if the Tigers got nuts and tried to shove Cabrera back across the diamond to play third base again -- where he began his career? That would mean the infield defense would be awful, but would also leave room for a better hitting DH than Brandon Inge (who, at this point, looks like the third baseman). And if Victor Martinez comes back healthy? It works even better.

The Tigers won the AL Central by 15 games last season. Even if Martinez misses all of the 2012 season, Fielder is a pretty sizeable upgrade to the offense. So it would appear the division is the Tigers' to lose.

For now, though, the only details that really matter are that Prince Fielder is heading to Detroit -- where his father once held down the middle of the order -- and he's going to make a whole lot of money.

New York sports teams as a whole are just as good or better then Detroit sports teams when in reality it's not true

I am a Chicago fan, and I get just as annoyed as anyone   with some of the NY arrogance, I just have to begrudginly admit that the Giants are a very well run and successfull football team and, the Lions through almost their entire history (at least in the SB era) are not.  Pistons are really bad right now but they were one of the few teams to ever win a title w/o a super elite player, and then tyhey also one 2 titles in the bad boy era.   To me, the Pistons > Knicks in much the same way as the Giants > Lions.  I HATE the Yankees, but they have a lot of hardware.   Tigers should have a really good team next year, which is a lot more than I can say for my Cubs.  I am glad Fielder will be bashing the Sox pitchers now instead of the Cubs, and good riddance to Pujols too.  I actually agree with some of your NY resentment, I just think comparing the Giants to the Lions is a bad way to prove it out.

Still nobody at the top of Detroit's lineup? I see alot of solo HR's in their future.
I honestly don't like Austin Jackson at leadoff, but in his 2 years in the MLB, he has scored 193 runs.  He slumped horribly last year and still hit .250, after hitting .293 his rookie year.  They said he made some adjustments to his swing, so hopefully it works out for him this year.

Brennan Boesch was at or above .300 all year in 2011 until he tore ligaments in his thumbs and tried to play thru it, before they had to shut him down.  He finished at .283 and scored 75 runs in 115 games.

I think those two guys will be just fine in the 1 and 2 holes.  Both are young players (Jackson at 24, Boesch at 26) with tremendous up side to them.  Couple that with the fact each player is going to see a lot of strikes, as no pitcher is going to want to walk either of them, as they know they have Cabrera and Fielder waiting at 3-4.  That will only help those two players out even more.

Detroit's lineup is just crazy right now and if VMart is able to make it back at the end of the year -- it will really be sick.  Cabrera, Peralta and Avila were all-stars last year.  Fielder was an all-star in the NL.  VMart hit .330 with 100+ rbi's.  Delmon Young hit 13 homeruns and had 38 rbi's in 49 games hitting in Detroit's lineup at the end of last year.

The other thing the addition of Fielder does is it gives Detroit a lineup that will alternate right and left handed hitters, so late in games, teams will be wasting their bullpen if they choose to use lefty relievers.

I wish we could actually fast forward to 2013 as I just want to see what this team will put up with Cabrera, Fielder and VMart in the 3-4-5 spots.  Hell -- alot of teams would love to have Detroit's 6-7-8 hitters in the middle of their order.  Delmon Young, Alex Avila, Jhonny Peralta.  LOL.

In baseball when you have pitching and hitting you are gonna win games...the division is a lock barring serious injuries to Verlander , Fister, Fielder, Cabrerra and Young.  The Tigers are gonna hit the snot out of the ball daily and our top 3 pitchers can be argued to be the best 3 in baseball.  I feel the only team better hitting wise in the American league is the Rangers and I still can argue our pitching staff is better then there.  This totally makes us better...the defense will be servicable but if you trust your pitchers(MVP CY Young Verlander) Fister who out pitched him down the stretch and one of the best closers in baseball(Papa Grande didn't lose 1 single save in the regular season) you are up there with the best.

Prince Fielder signs with the Tigers

Wow, I did not see this coming. I guess it feels good to go home. As a Brewers fan I can say that I am disappointed that Prince left, especially with the Braun situation that is still ongoing. Being a realist though I knew it was inevitable, we simply could not afford him. This is a great move for the Tigers only if Miguel Cabrera works out at third, not sure he can do it but also not sure he cannot. I do look forward to seeing how this team plays this year. I am glad our owner didn't pay Prince what he wanted because we have a bunch of young talent that can bring us similar(not the same) numbers as Prince did at a budget price. However that being said I am glad to see Prince get the contract he wanted because honestly what our organization was paying him was a joke. Very reminiscent of the Cards and Pujols monetarily early on.

Prince I do want to thank you for the time you spent with us here in Milwaukee it has been six great years that have brought a feeling of "Hey we got a shot!" in to a baseball team that was terrible for many years. Thank you for helping our team get back to winning more than we lose and for staying classy the whole time. Best of luck with your new place in life and new team, I will probably make it over to Detroit to catch a game or two this year so I have a chance to see how this all works out.

@RedWings, will you please explain to everyone that my previous post was just a dig at Brian8ball. Even you seem to think I'm him. LOL You do know better than to think Brian is using my screen  don't you man ??Smile

Grandetroit is new so he wouldn't know about Brian's crazy rants and antics. Please explain to everyone that I am not really Brian8ball.

Mempatfan.  I have no idea what I typed that would make you think that I believe you are Brian8ball, I don't believe that to be the case at all.  Brian8ball is a crackhead loser that hounds people on these boards on a daily basis.   You are nothing like him.....

I have no idea why anybody thinks you're Brian8ball, but you're obviously not.  I highly doubt anybody would even pretend to be brian8ball for even one post, the guy might be clinically insane for God sakes.
