Prince Fielder signs with the Tigers

Chalk up one more for the so-called mystery team. First it was Cliff Lee going to the Phillies, then Albert Pujols heading to the Angels. Now Prince Fielder has shocked the baseball world by signing with the Detroit Tigers, a team that hadn't even been remotely connected to him in rumors the entire offseason. The robust first baseman has signed a nine-year contract worth $214 million, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman has learned.

The Tigers were recently dealt what appeared to be a pretty severe blow, as Victor Martinez tore his ACL and could miss the entire 2012 season. So there went Miguel Cabrera's lineup protection, right? Think again. Owner Mike Ilitch really wants to win a World Series championship and this signing indicates one of the strongest reactions one can even imagine to news like that.

Prince to Tigers
Heyman also notes that the finalists to land Fielder were the Nationals, Tigers and one other "mystery team." So it's entirely possible the Nationals would have come away with Fielder had Martinez not torn his ACL. It's funny how things work sometimes.

A Fielder-Cabrera combo in the middle of that order will dominate AL Central pitching. Throw Justin Verlander into the mix, and the Tigers have three of baseball's biggest stars.

Fielder, 27, hit .299/.415/.566 with 38 homers, 120 RBI, 95 runs and 36 doubles last season for the NL Central champion Brewers. He finished third in MVP voting and also took home the All-Star Game MVP. Though Fielder is a large man, he is as durable as they come. He hasn't played in less than 157 games in a season since becoming a regular. He played in all 162 last season, following up seasons where he appeared in 161 and 162 games, respectively.

The smart money with Fielder and Cabrera is a split at first base, with the other serving as the designated hitter. Then again, what if the Tigers got nuts and tried to shove Cabrera back across the diamond to play third base again -- where he began his career? That would mean the infield defense would be awful, but would also leave room for a better hitting DH than Brandon Inge (who, at this point, looks like the third baseman). And if Victor Martinez comes back healthy? It works even better.

The Tigers won the AL Central by 15 games last season. Even if Martinez misses all of the 2012 season, Fielder is a pretty sizeable upgrade to the offense. So it would appear the division is the Tigers' to lose.

For now, though, the only details that really matter are that Prince Fielder is heading to Detroit -- where his father once held down the middle of the order -- and he's going to make a whole lot of money.

Locked and loaded now!  This Tigers team finished strong, pulled away from the dreaded AL Central three team race and won the division by 15 games.  Then, against NYY - won the ALDS and took Texas to 6 in the ALCS.  Yes, Tigers for real, and adding this piece ... sweet.  Go Detroit!

Detroit can afford this? How can an impoverished and depressed city fill seats and pay this guy? MLB contracts are a sham. But, Prince can now almost single-handedly get D Town out of its housing depression...

The Giants won a superbowl years ago, and yes they got there again this year.  But between 2 New York teams I would hardly call one superbowl victory in 40 years much of an accomplishment, zero isn't that much better then one.
Giants have won 3 in the last 40 years, btw. 1987, 1991, 2008. Nice slam on that guy, though. well thought out and researched.

You had one elite team in detriot. That was the redwings. The lions have sucked for 20 years. The tigers are good, but they are not elite. NY has the yankees, the rangers are in first place and the Giants are in the superbowl. So how is detriot elite and better than NY? I have many friends that live in Detriot. Its a shit hole. Let be honest here.

You're too funny.   First of all although New York has more sports teams then Detroit or almost any other city they haven't had as much success as we've had in Detroit son.   The Lions sucked for 20 years, but not any more.  The Giants won a superbowl years ago, and yes they got there again this year.  But between 2 New York teams I would hardly call one superbowl victory in 40 years much of an accomplishment, zero isn't that much better then one.  The Rangers are in first place you say? The Wings kill them, don't ever compare New York to Detroit in hockey again.  In the last 20 years I believe the Pistons have had a lot more success then the Knicks have.  And in baseball the Yankees have had more success, but if we can win the world series this year we'll be tied with the Yankees for championships in the last 12 years with one each.

New York for the huge market they are in and multiple teams in every sport and unlimited budgets hasn't had much success over the last 10 years.  Don't kid yourself.

Let's be honest here :)

@ the pittsburgh guy.

1st off all stienbrenner did not have more money then quite a few other owners in fact quite a few have a lot more money then he did  they just don't spend it.  mybe he has more money then the pirates owner but go look at the twins late owner and see how much he ws worth, its twice as much as big george was worth, the angles sowner is richer then george.  arn't the mariniers owned by freaking nintendo corporation for christ sakes but they don't have any money to keep anyone ever...  the joke is not the yanks the joke is all thes other super rich people pretending like they can't afford.

question for you.  i ask this of everyone who rips the players and/or owners over money and free agency and no one ever answers.  If I offered you a new job to come work for me and do the exact same thing you do now but for twice the money would you say no to me because it was unfair to your current employer who can't afford to match my offer?  care to give an honest answer to that?

thereal10 is a typical Yankee slappy!  It's ok for your team to spend big money to buy a Chmpionship, but when somebody else does it's all wrong.  Funny how the Tigers wiped thier butts with your team the last 2 times they've met in the playoffs!
The RedWings have dominated the NHL for the last 10+ years and you're gonna brag that the Rnagers are in first place?  Check the standing, chief, the RedWings have the most points in the NHL!!!
And the Lions havn't sucked for 20 tears, it's been 50!  If you're gonna bag on us, do it right!  And btw, the Giants play in NJ!
I'll even pile on just a bit!  The Pistons have won 3 champioships since the Knicks last did in 1972-73!!

Welcome to the "D"!!!

Prince Fielder signs with the Tigers

ALL I KNOW IS THAT PRINCE FIELDER WILL BE SORRY HE EVER SIGNED WITH A SORRY TEAM SUCH AS THE TIGERS. THEY PLAY IN THAT HORRIBLE CITY OF LOSERS KNOWN AS DETROIT LED BY PATHETIC FANS AND TROLLERS LIKE RED WINGS AND SKLAOS AND THE YANKEES HAVE 27 WORLD SERIES WINS TO THE TIGERS 2 AND THE JOKE ABOUT DETROIT TIGERS AND LIONS FANS IS---

Holy crap !!  BRIAN8BALL?  Wow.  Welcome back man !!!  LOL

And oh yeah, I agree.  Fielder is going to hate playing on a team that's very likely to win the division and go to the playoffs for the next few years, that's really gonna suck !!!  I mean, who plays for having a chance to win a world series anyway?  Fielder is a fool !!!!

And he's really going to hate going up to bat with runners on base most of the time, that's going to get boring after a while.  Hitting time and time again with runners in scoring position?  That bites !!!!   And I don't even know how he's going to handle having a kid hit behind him that him around .300 last year with power.  Opposing teams won't be able to pitch around him and he's going to see way too many pitches he can hit out of the park.... that's tremendous pressure and I'm sure Fielder is going to complain on a daily basis.

Furthermore, people don't always realize this ( Obviously Fielder didn't) but Detroit is a very good hitters park.  A lot of hits and tons of extra base hits as well, he's gonna hate that.  And he's hardly going to be able to stand hitting a bunch of games in Boston and New York where the fences are so close it's not even a challenge to hit the ball out.  He's gonna get bored really quick.  And Toronto is another great hitters park too... the ball carries like crazy in Texas.....  man, is Fielder ever gonna hate his life.

Nice call Brian.....  most people don't see what you see.....

Cuz you're smart :)
