The Nationals have signed former Phillies closer Brad Lidge to a one-year deal, the team announced on Thursday.

The 35-year-old Lidge appeared in just 25 games for the Phillies last season because of a shoulder injury. His 2010 was limited by an elbow injury.

Lidge was 0-2 with a 1.40 ERA in those 25 games last season, but managed just 19 1/3 innings, striking out 23 and walking 13, putting up a WHIP of 1.500.

With Washington, the right-hander will likely serve as a setup man for closer Drew Storen and right-hander Tyler Clippard.

Lidge has 223 career saves with the Astros and Phillies over 10 seasons, accumulating a 26-31 record and a 3.44 ERA.

Brad Lidge signs 1-year deal with Nationals

I'm not sure why Kudo's are given here. Brad Lidge has been toast for 2 years now. He has no velocity on his fastball and his only weapon right now (Slider) is killing his arm.
It hasn't been killing his arm, recovering from his initial injury has been killing his arm.  The guy reinvented himself and we all got a taste of it last year.  It wasn't enough though to keep him on the roster because he would demand quite a bit of money to stay.  Instead, they let him go and they have more then sufficient talent to replace him.

Thanks for everything Lidge.  Your 2008 season was one for the ages.

Just like you, I will always a spot in my heart for Brad Lidge. The Phils just do not win that WS in 2008 without that hammer in the BP. He will always be a hero in Philly. But now its 2012 and Lidge just does not have the same stuff anymore. He really has lost his fastball and has become almost a one pitch pitcher with his slider. Good hitters will make Lidge throw pitches resulting in 25-30 pitch innings. But to you Nats fans.....support this guy! You will never hear an excuse from Brad Lidge and he will give you 100% every time he gets the ball. At the very least, Brad Lidge is the ultimate teammate and great guy in your young clubhouse. IMO, it is a very good signing for the Nats.

He was lights out the year Phils won it all, but that seems like it was his career year and everyone knows now, slider, slider, slider, slider.

Not sure why we need a washed up bum like Lidge, who will add nothing to our stellar bullpen, unless Cole Kimball's surgery didn't go well.  Maybe he can give us some idea how to pitch to the Phillies lineup.  Glad we aren't paying him much.

It's over for Lidge - atleast in relation to being a top notch reliever. He'll be a 4+ ERA guy if used more than 40 games.

Lidge going from $12 Mill in 2011 to $1 Mill plus incentives in 2012.  Kudo's to Rizzo for getting that deal done.  Let's hope his shoulder is healthy and earns some phat incentive $$ this year.  Nats pitching may be on the verge of becoming a strength instead of weakness.  Of course, injuries have alot to do with that.

Forget Fielder, Boras was dangling the Nats to drive up the market.  The number of years Prince was demanding made him not feasible for NL clubs.  Nats will have to ride it out with LaRoche at first until Harper is ready and LaRoche's contract expires.  Morse becomes first baseman and Nats will have to find a center fielder or step it up in the Yoennis Céspedes Milanés bidding war that's about to erupt.  BJ Upton might be had for a reasonable price?

Gotta like the direction this team is going (outside of the Werth deal).  Lot's of young talent and ownership that's okay with doing some spending.
