Free agent outfielder Juan Pierre has signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies, the club announced Friday.

The 34-year-old Pierre is a true pro in every sense of the word, but his on-field value at this point isn't much. He hit .279 last season, but he rarely walks and has no power, so his .657 OPS is pretty poor. Plus, he's a corner outfielder now, so the lack of power hurts his value even more. He did steal 27 bases last year, but was caught stealing 17 times.

Pierre is only going to be providing depth for the Phillies, though it's not too much a stretch to see him playing quite a bit at some point. Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence aren't going anywhere, but the left field job belongs to Laynce Nix right now, with John Mayberry the backup. You'd think Domonic Brown would get another look, but if not, Pierre is waiting in the wings.

Phillies sign Pierre to minor-league deal

As much as I think Amaro is an idiot for overpaying for everyone and failing to address the bench I have to admit he has the bench covered this year.  Nix, Wigginton, Thome and Pierre are a huge upgrade over the slop we've used in prior years.  It still doesnt excuse handing out huge contracts like candy on Halloween, but it should pay dividends in the playoffs.  With Utley injury prone and in big decline, Howard likely to miss half the year, and a slap hitter at a power spot the Phils next move should be to fire the idiot coaching the team.  There is no way he can make the deicsions he's going to need to make.  This team has serious shortcomings and it's going to take some managing to overcome them.  Manuel has yet to show he can do anything other than Fergosi it, ie go with what one formula and hope it works.

The Phillies are certainly overstocking, they want competition in spring, the last few years all but maybe one roster spot was set, I like whats going on here, nobody is safe. They are trying to up the ante and set the tone differently. Brown isnt coming along until next season, which doesnt sit well for the future of Victorino. This gives him another year to get more comfortable. Currently his trade value is shot or he would have been moved this offseason. 34 isnt super old either, Pierre could fill a gap here for a few years.

So Pierre probably has gas left in the tank...but is any keeping score for the Left Field vacancy left assuming Ibanez is done? Phillies have Mayberry, Pierre, Nix, and D Brown...I wonder if the Phillies are keeping track too, or just looking for good "buys." That is super crowded outfield spot as if there weren't already questions going into this off season. At this point, maybe the Phillies should try to trade Brown for a true star left fielder!

Phillies sign Pierre to minor-league deal

The main point of my coment was that Philadelphia might not have been a wise choice for him given the competition for playing time he'll be facing.  I think there are a lot of teams that could give him a better opportunity to both make the roster and play on a daily basis.
If he hadn't been signed yet, I doubt teams were falling over themselves to knock on his door.  This is the type of deal signed by a guy who knows he's at the end of his career.  He's just looking for an opportunity and Philly has one.  My biggest issue with this signing, should he make the team, is that he's another lefty.

Notorious, I stand corrected; he was a backup to Manny in LA.  But he has been a starter for the vast majority of his career, including the last couple years.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I hope he finds a way to make the team, the phillies really need a player like this, although they already had podsednik. apparently philly is creating log jams and letting players battle it out in spring.. this spring wont be as relaxed as previous springs.. its good for the team to keep players on their toes.

I am a little surprised he signed with Philadelphia.  I'm also surprised he signed only a minor league contract.  He has been an every day player for the his entire career.  Philly has 4 potential left fielders and at least a couple capable players at 3B.  He'll be facing a lot of competition for playing time.

Last year was a step backward for him, at least in terms of speed (His main point of value).  Is he washed up or will he rebound this year? Sitting on the Philly bench might not be the best way to prove you can still play.
Juan Pierre took a back seat to Manny in LA.  He only became an everyday player again with the Sox.  I like the signing if it's cheap, he can get on base, and he can play left effectively.  To be honest, though, I see this as the same kind of deal handed to his former teammate last year.  I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't make the roster at the end of spring training.

You don't think Pierre will make the Phillies roster??? If he doesn't start he will be on the bench with Nix. The guy averages 150 games a year for 11 years and starts and bats around .300, and now you think he can't play on the phillies?? Mayberry and Pierre can platoon. And Dominic Brown needs a full year in AAA because he sucked after he went back to the minors and needs to build confidence back up.

I really don't think that Pierre will make the Phillies Roster, Mayberry and Nix has more power then Pierre. Pierre going have to play great this spring training to prove that he can still be a starter for someone
