Free agent outfielder Juan Pierre has signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies, the club announced Friday.

The 34-year-old Pierre is a true pro in every sense of the word, but his on-field value at this point isn't much. He hit .279 last season, but he rarely walks and has no power, so his .657 OPS is pretty poor. Plus, he's a corner outfielder now, so the lack of power hurts his value even more. He did steal 27 bases last year, but was caught stealing 17 times.

Pierre is only going to be providing depth for the Phillies, though it's not too much a stretch to see him playing quite a bit at some point. Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence aren't going anywhere, but the left field job belongs to Laynce Nix right now, with John Mayberry the backup. You'd think Domonic Brown would get another look, but if not, Pierre is waiting in the wings.

Moron, I said it was a great pick up for a minor league contract. If it were millions for 3 years I would say this is an awful move. And if you read what I said this is better than Laynce Nix!!! Oh im sorry is a .280 avg bad???? Because last I checked 75% of our lineup batted below .260. And he strikes out once every 18 at bats. I'm sick of our lineup swinging and missing and being at the top of the league each year in striking out. Once again for someone who didn't read my comment, its a great pick up for a MINOR League contract, its low risk, high reward. This guy has played in 27 playoff games and has experience and is smart at the plate, not like a handful of our players.

Honestly I would not have minded him on the Giants. If he could get back to 30+ steals and a decent average.

Yes, "liability" IN THE OUTFIELD as previous poster said.  Plus, don't tell me what he did two years ago when he was 32 -- look at last year and remember he's only getting older which is especially bad for a player who has only one thing going in his career, namely - SPEED.  2010 he hit .275, last year .279 so I would not expect anything more.  Plus only stole 27 of 44 last year, not a good average for a guy like Pierre used to be.  On defense, absolutely no arm and lost the speed to play center -- with decreasing range he is a defensive liablilty.  Pierre is a good guy and was a good player, now he is very average at best.  Not a horrible signing for depth since its only a minor league deal but definately not the kind of signing to brag about -- there is a reason he was still on the market and willing to take a minor league deal at 34.

Liability?? He bats .300 and stole 68 bases two years ago. He never gets injured and is better than Laynce Nix. This is a great pick up for a minor league contract. He has won a ring and wants another.

Just more depth for the Phillies outfield.  I have a feeling that the Phillies might be trying to shop Mayberry Jr. soon because they've seem to have stockpiled a bit with these MLB-quality players with minor league contracts.
