The Rangers have agreed to a two-year contract extension with manager Ron Washington. Washington was signed through the upcoming 2012 season, so he's now locked up through 2014.

Rangers offseason
Washington's track record in his five seasons as a manager is very impressive. The Rangers have improved every single season under him. Washington started with a 75-87 record in 2007, then won 79 games in 2008 and 87 in 2009. In 2010, they won 90 in the regular season, winning the AL West championship. They then took down the Rays in the ALDS for the first postseason series victory in club history. But they weren't done, as they also won the ALCS over the Yankees, advancing to the World Series for the first time in club history.

Then, in 2011, Washington continued his improvement. The Rangers won a club-record 96 games and came within one strike of winning the World Series.

Washington, 59, is now 427-383 at the helm, good for a .527 winning percentage. In terms of full-time managers, only Billy Hunter (.575 in just two seasons) was better for the Rangers. Washington also ranks third in total wins for Rangers managers, trailing Bobby Valentine (581) and Johnny Oates (506). With three more seasons under contract, Washington should cruise to the franchise record, as he's only 154 wins away from Valentine.

Rangers give Washington 2-year extension

The players like Ron Washington, but that doesn't make him a good manager. This team is better, because the talent level is better. The trades, and free agents the Rangers have made is the biggest reason this team is where it is today. The players though, do like him, and as a result, they give and play harder. He has been out managed the last 2 years in both world series, and continues to make bone head mistakes with his starting pitching. I'm sure he is learning from past mistakes, and maybe he should listen to his other coaches a little more. But as long as the players are responding, this team is going to continue to win. We has fans of the Rangers can only hope that he will learn from past failures.

Rangers give Washington 2-year extension

Wash has an unorthodox way of handling a baseball team but to a man the players absolutely love him. More importantly they respect him. From afar he probably looks like a clown but when he sees that a player isn't pulling his weight or is not playing up to Wash's expectations of that player gets the message loud and clear. i.e Elvis Andrus. The Rangers management's decision to keep Ron after he tested positive for cocaine was pure genius. If you dont have haters you aren't doing much so...

My observation is that Washington has become a more successful manager year over year partly because of the better personnel he has had to work with, compliments of the front office. But I've also observed him making better decisions as a manager, so he certainly deserves a lot of credit for the improvement.

And apart from game time decisions, Washington has certainly managed the clubhouse effectively. There was a huge potential for the Michael Young situation last year to blow up into a real mess. Washington very adroitly turned Michael's situation from a buzz killer into an (almost) MVP type of year.

Now he has to find a way to make a 7 man pitching rotation happy. My money says Wash and Mike Maddux will succeed in doing just that, and will possibly improve the record again this year, even if it's only by one game.

Wash has certainly won me over, and even if he had not, I would still have confidence in Ryan and Daniels and company to make the right call on this. With these guys, it is about putting the best people on the field or in the front office. During the season I am amazed at what some of the players accomplish. In the off-season, I marvel at what the front office gets done.
