Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a past that isn't a secret to any baseball fan. He battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and then came back from them to become one of baseball's most recognizable stars.

Unfortunately, according to the Dallas Morning News, Hamilton relapsed and drank alcohol this week in the Dallas area. If the initial report wasn't enough, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is also reporting the relapse.

Also, the Rangers have released this statement: "We are aware of a situation, but we don't have further comment at this time."

Hamilton is without an "accountability coach" at present. This isn't the first time he's relapsed, either. Back in 2009, he drank in excess and some photos of him surfaced on Hamilton would say, at the time:

"It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things." (

Hamilton is a free agent after the 2012 season.

UPDATE: Katie Hamilton, Josh's wife, has posted the following message on Twitter:

“Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are showing us such love and encouragement during this time.”

UPDATE II: Hamilton spoke for a bit over 10 minutes in a press conference and came clean.

Reports: Josh Hamilton relapsed, drank alcohol

From someone who has witnessed addiction first hand... This is a big deal... It isn't just an alcohol addiction, Josh Hamilton was a border line junkie... He's done an amazing job getting his life back together and playing baseball at a high level and on the biggest stage of all... But, as any former addict can tell you, a relapse, any relapse, even slight as it may be could lead you right back into that downward spiral... Hopefully for Josh's sake and the sake of his family, this doesn't lead to that... Best of luck to Josh Hamilton, I know it isn't easy, but you have shown that it is possible and remain an inspiration to many of us out there.

If you don't think this is a real issue then you are blind and ignorant. Hamilton has lived both sides of the coin and knows better than most the sour and the sweet. If you think choosing a path back to the desolate life versus the luxuries of being an Major League, an All Star major league player is a rational conscious choice, wake up! The demons are great and have taken the life of fame and luxury away from many players. They do not wake up and say I wish to be a derelict, instead the disease allows them to think they can control the situation, when it’s obvious to anyone sober they are risking it all. Good Luck Josh Hamilton. I hope you get the help and support you need in time before the demons gain control.

You are the one who has a case of stupidity. It is estimated that 30-45 million people in this country have a form of addiction yet, you can sit in front of your computer and make fun of an epidemic that effects nearly everyone in someway.

Good luck Josh one day at a time.

Lots of people have a drink now and again, do we really think he is a drunk all the time.   After what happend with him throwing the foul ball just a bit short and now a kid doesn't have a daddy, personally if I was him I would get drunk every night to take away the pain.

I think that somebody in Josh's position, should he want to have a drink, should do it at home in private. That way there'll be no photos for the media, and nobody will ever know...

I wish him all the best.

They better gim onto him quickly before he picks up the pipe and start smoking that CRACK COCAINE CRAP.  A really good high, but dam if it ain't the TOOL OF THE DEVIL.  And if you got the money it has the time for ya.  They better be ALL OVER HIS ARSE to prevent a tragedy from happening.  RECOVERY is a life long process and that pipe can bring ya down and put you in the room behind closed doors and keep ya there....UNTIL it times to gets some more crack!  You dig people!!  Life is a bitch.

As a lot of people have said: nothing to see here.. It sells papers, but it's really no ones business but Hamilton's. If he shows up to the Ballpark drunk, it become a Rangers issue. If he gets a DWI, it's a problem. A relapse is his business. I've been sober for 12 years and I never relapsed, but most of the people I've known over the years have..Dealing with addiction, whether is alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, whatever, is never easy and is usually a lifetime battle. For everyone who thinks its funny - hopefully karma will help you get addicted to something so you can go through the hell of breaking yourself from that addiction.

the term "relapse" is misused here. if you know you are alergic to something and do it anyway it is stupidity, not relapse.

Alcoholism aint a joke. Just because it's legal in our country doesn't mean it's a good thing to do.  If it wasn't for whiskey, us Irish folk wouldve taken over the world long ago.  I quit booze over 4 years ago after abusing it for many years. Best move I ever made.  If Hamilton is drinking again you can kiss his ass goodbye.  Alcoholics dont have one, we have 10, then some powder and maybe a freak or two.  To each his own, lets hope that this dude stays sober and keeps raking.
