Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a past that isn't a secret to any baseball fan. He battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and then came back from them to become one of baseball's most recognizable stars.

Unfortunately, according to the Dallas Morning News, Hamilton relapsed and drank alcohol this week in the Dallas area. If the initial report wasn't enough, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is also reporting the relapse.

Also, the Rangers have released this statement: "We are aware of a situation, but we don't have further comment at this time."

Hamilton is without an "accountability coach" at present. This isn't the first time he's relapsed, either. Back in 2009, he drank in excess and some photos of him surfaced on Deadspin.com. Hamilton would say, at the time:

"It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things." (Dallasnews.com)

Hamilton is a free agent after the 2012 season.

UPDATE: Katie Hamilton, Josh's wife, has posted the following message on Twitter:

“Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are showing us such love and encouragement during this time.”

UPDATE II: Hamilton spoke for a bit over 10 minutes in a press conference and came clean.

Reports: Josh Hamilton relapsed, drank alcohol

I really hope that Josh Hamilton can finally come to the realization that booze & drugs are a one-way ticket to nowhere for him & give them up permanently.

I'm not even sure why this is even "an issue."  The guy responsibly quit booze, so now, the media has to report if the guy has one drink?  HUH?

2009 - 2012, that's a lot of time between drinks. I don't drink at all, but if I had been an alcoholic, I'd be pretty impressed with myself for going three years, especially since, as far as we know, he didn't harm anyone, and he will rebound. It's not like the guy murdered someone. He had A drink! Instead of them saying:  "Hey, it's been 2009 since his last drink, quite impressive!", it's "Josh Hamilton HAD A DRINK! A RELAPSE!" and oh, by the way, his contract is up this year...let me try to make this miniscule story seem important by acting as if Josh Hamilton having A drink could effect his contract after next year!

Again, why is this even news?  He'll be fine and he'll go another three years before they bash him again because he went into a convenience store and got a six-pack of NyQuil for the flu...  that's really how ridiculous this case is.  This time his drink was reported by two newspapers...  will it be THREE next time?  Hilarious!!

God bless you Josh, you've made some mistakes, we all have, and you are living every minute of every day trying to fix them, yet the media must bring up every time you have A drink! Keep living for Jesus, bro, your His kid, and you are doing your best - ain't nothin' but love coming from the Father!

Reports: Josh Hamilton relapsed, drank alcohol

As an Angels fan it is not nice seeing a rival franchise's player struggling with such a debilitating and aggressive disease. Unfortunately living in the public eye raises the pressure on trying to beat the disease. I hope Josh, can and is given the time to try and to beat the disease with the love, help and support of his family and teammates.

Anyone dissing Hamilton and/ or the disease need to wise up and realise that it could be them or member of their family or friend in the same situation.

Good luck Josh

He has come a long way these past couple of years and has been great for baseball.  Hopefully, he can recover from this and stay strong.  Baseball won't be the same without him.

Josh is fighting a never ending battle with alcoholism. I am sure for a high profile athlete it must be magnified. Relapse is a common event for all alcoholics but not necessary. Please understand he is attempting to recover and this is not a character issue but a health issue. In order to recover from this hideous disease is a complete mental and spiritual rebirth. He will need to face the harsh reality of recovery FIRST.

Its too bad this story appears to have the tone of something negative. Josh has a disease that affects millions of people around the world and hist contract status should be the least of his worries. Hopefully he doesn;t fall too hard and has a fantastic season, best of luck to Josh and his family.
