Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a past that isn't a secret to any baseball fan. He battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and then came back from them to become one of baseball's most recognizable stars.

Unfortunately, according to the Dallas Morning News, Hamilton relapsed and drank alcohol this week in the Dallas area. If the initial report wasn't enough, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is also reporting the relapse.

Also, the Rangers have released this statement: "We are aware of a situation, but we don't have further comment at this time."

Hamilton is without an "accountability coach" at present. This isn't the first time he's relapsed, either. Back in 2009, he drank in excess and some photos of him surfaced on Deadspin.com. Hamilton would say, at the time:

"It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things." (Dallasnews.com)

Hamilton is a free agent after the 2012 season.

UPDATE: Katie Hamilton, Josh's wife, has posted the following message on Twitter:

“Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are showing us such love and encouragement during this time.”

UPDATE II: Hamilton spoke for a bit over 10 minutes in a press conference and came clean.

Media pressure isn't going to help this.  Just leave the guy alone and let him and his inner circle figure this out.  Shaming him in public at a presser isn't going to accomplish anything...

Does anyone know the degree to which he drank? was it a beer or two or was it like 2009?

I know EVERYTHING about addiction so don't talk like you know me. Try dealing with a coke addiction and then come and talk to me. I still want to do lines every day of my life, but I fight the urge and refuse to touch the stuff because I value my life and my family more than 8 balls. Truth is, if Josh Hamilton was just a homeless bum on the street nobody would even blink an eye and would bash the hell out of him and call him a worthless junkie. But no, just because he's a doggone good ballplayer, people still idolize him, which leads them to sympathize with him and it's THAT attitude towards it that enables and encourages someone to do it again. Addiction is NOT a disease. It's strictly weakness. Addicts don't need sympathy. They need to be kicked in the behind. I resent him for not being strong enough to put his life and family above the junk and I especially resent people like you, mjg75, that make it sound like it's not his fault he is the way he is.

Addiction is a disease. An insidious disease that cannot be cured, only treated. Will power has nothing to do with staying clean. It is always easy to look at an addiction from the outside. Live an addicted life and you would understand. The addiction ruins everything, your life, your family, and your surroundings.

An addict wants to be normal and does not always understand that they can control the disease. Everybody wants to be in control. What an addict has to do to stay clean is get out of the way of themselves and allow others to lead them. There are tools to help but sometimes life plays mean tricks.

You have no clue about addiction. Addiction is an insidious disease that can be treated not cured. All the will in the world cannot cure a person addicted.

I cannot STAND how people try to classify this as a disease! Cancer is a disease! Let's call this what it really is....someone with the entire world at his fingertips that doesn't have enough discipline not to stay away from something that can destroy his entire world! He has every reason to stay away from the junk and keep clean and still can't! I have ZERO respect for anybody in that position. Do I think he's a bad guy? NO! Absolutely not! He is, however, a weak willed individual that's going to end up going down the crapper especially once his baseball career is over. Just about anybody would give their left nut to be in his shoes and he treats his life like garbage. If you know you have a weakness for something that's very addictive, then you HAVE to stay away from it completely. There's no "oh, I'll just have one and be okay". That's not how it works with an addict.

For all this guy has been through in his life, you would think the Media would cut him some slack and show compassion. People like this need encouragement not another foot to trample them. Josh is a great player that has a problem. Those that care about him will take care of him. The last thing he needs is the press and the general public on his back.

Let's see the Rangers lost the World Series for the 2nd year in a row right after Hamilton hits what should be a game winning homer while hurt in the decisive game 7 and a monumental comeback by the Cardinals.  He has a drink.  Well at least he is smart enough and I mean very intelligent that he realizes he shouldn't or couldn't after he did.  Way to acknowledge the problem Josh and good job revealing the problem because the Rangers pay you a lot of money to be a professional and they deserve to have you healthy.
