Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a past that isn't a secret to any baseball fan. He battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and then came back from them to become one of baseball's most recognizable stars.

Unfortunately, according to the Dallas Morning News, Hamilton relapsed and drank alcohol this week in the Dallas area. If the initial report wasn't enough, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is also reporting the relapse.

Also, the Rangers have released this statement: "We are aware of a situation, but we don't have further comment at this time."

Hamilton is without an "accountability coach" at present. This isn't the first time he's relapsed, either. Back in 2009, he drank in excess and some photos of him surfaced on Deadspin.com. Hamilton would say, at the time:

"It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things." (Dallasnews.com)

Hamilton is a free agent after the 2012 season.

UPDATE: Katie Hamilton, Josh's wife, has posted the following message on Twitter:

“Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are showing us such love and encouragement during this time.”

UPDATE II: Hamilton spoke for a bit over 10 minutes in a press conference and came clean.

Reports: Josh Hamilton relapsed, drank alcohol

Josh is not a bad guy. He is a sick guy. This disease is a fatal one unless proper treatment is followed. I wish him all the best

Would everyone stop acting like alcoholism and addiction is a disease!?!? I've been an addict and my father has been an alcoholic, so I've lived this, fear not. When you have a disease...like lymphoma or emphysema, you ARE crippled by it. You ARE powerless to what is taking over your body, and the only way to beat it is to get rid of it.

But Josh is NOT powerless to alcohol. Unless there are some major ommissions in this story, Josh proved that he can drink responsibly, not make an ass of himself, not let it affect his career or family (until of course the media broke this story). Because alcoholism and addiction are not some uncontrollable epidemic. They are lifestyle choices to be irresposible with vehicles of sheer fun. And to recover from these bad decision, these bad tendencies you have, you must learn how to simply operate these vehicles responsibly. Otherwise, you're still laying on the hospital bed

Not sure what to make of this story.  For some reason it seems Hamilton is entering a John Dalyesque persona, tho not yet to that extreme.  I wish him the best in his trials and tribulations.

Triple Ditto

And by not allowing Hamilton to prove his ability to be a responsible user, you leave him on the outskirts of mainstream society, without an identity beyond his sobreity, without tangible reward for being above the influence. You walk him into a spiralling notion that hes' overcome his addiction, when he simply lives in fear of it.

Getting trashed and publicly being an ass is obviously no good. Being the guy who goes out with their buddies to the bar and doesn't drink is equally as alienating

I'm torn on what to make of this story.  Substance abuse is no joke- losing a round in a battle with the issue is a big deal to the person involved.  On the other hand, it is a personal battle, and I see no reason to have millions of eyes watching Josh Hamilton as he deals with his situation.  I guess the only useful thing that can come out of the publicity around these events is a chance to give information to those who don't know what this battle is all about, and a reminder of how tough the road is for those who have to deal with it.  Good luck to you,  Josh Hamilton.  I hope today is a good day for you.

Always love it when people who are not addicts or alcoholics comment on such issues. Addiction is like trying to explain the color orange to a totally blind man. Unless you lived it, you know not what you speak of. Josh is not a bad guy. He is a sick guy. This disease is a fatal one unless proper treatment is followed. I wish him all the best.

i had alcohol last night as well.  Big deal this is not news.  Leave the guy alone.  He is over 21 and not breaking the law by having a pop or two.  He will get back on course and be fine.  Not news cbs try again.

johnU11, AWESOME POST!!!

There's a whole world of people the abuser touches in life. All of them are affected.

It's not "just one drink"!  He got caught having "a drink" or "a few harmless drinks" but who knows what else he drank or ingested (smoked, etc).  I hope he never has another drink or any narcotic.

Josh ( if this should get your way.... ):  you have to know that many, MANY people are pulling for you - especially after this last year !     Do the best you are able and know that many, MANY of us are behind you all the way in your battle(s) and think and pray for you daily.
