Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a past that isn't a secret to any baseball fan. He battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and then came back from them to become one of baseball's most recognizable stars.

Unfortunately, according to the Dallas Morning News, Hamilton relapsed and drank alcohol this week in the Dallas area. If the initial report wasn't enough, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is also reporting the relapse.

Also, the Rangers have released this statement: "We are aware of a situation, but we don't have further comment at this time."

Hamilton is without an "accountability coach" at present. This isn't the first time he's relapsed, either. Back in 2009, he drank in excess and some photos of him surfaced on Deadspin.com. Hamilton would say, at the time:

"It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things." (Dallasnews.com)

Hamilton is a free agent after the 2012 season.

UPDATE: Katie Hamilton, Josh's wife, has posted the following message on Twitter:

“Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are showing us such love and encouragement during this time.”

UPDATE II: Hamilton spoke for a bit over 10 minutes in a press conference and came clean.

Reports: Josh Hamilton relapsed, drank alcohol

It's tough for people with addicitive personalities to fight drugs, alcohol and well, any vice. I'm a firm believer that you need to confront these issues on your own. Hamilton seems to need a personal babysitter and a reliance on his faith instead of relying on his willpower and his own inner strength. I sincerely hope he finds a way to win this battle. You have to wonder what will happen to him after his playing career. It will be tougher then.

CommonSensePlz, thanks for sharing your story.  I agree that alcohol can have devastating effects.  Although it doesn't effect everyone in the same way that doesn't take away from the reality of potential tragic effects of alcohol.  Alcohol is legalized poison!!  It's legal only because it is a billion dollar industry.  Politicians (legislators) allow it to be legal because they are ADDICTED to the donations from THE ALCOHOL INDUSTRY!

Its only human to see if you can handle a vice.  If he can I believe he will, If he can't sounds like he knows it.  As far as a accountability coach/sponser...its all about the individual...but at the end of the day you better learn what you can or cannot do before it kills you...

Are you on CRACK? This guy is a CLOWN, just because he says he will do something doesn't mean anything based on his past and current actions. For some reason some reason we accept the BS some have to offer, then the people that try to tell the truth we can not accept anything. This guy acts like he is a GOOD OLE BOY, and it is true. Who wouldn't like to have a Beer with this FOOL? The reason he is accepted and forgiven so much, is because MOST of us have something in common with him!

Is this really a headline for baseball today?! Josh Hamilton drinks alcohol. What professional athlete doesn't?!? Look, Josh has put his past in the past and although is lacking a "guidance coach" still has a very supportive group around him (teammates, Rangers organization, wife and family) who will all help him stay on track.

Big deal he drinks on the weekend.

Young Harl$, thanks for being honest!  People that think that Hamilton having drinks is not a story are naive!  Hamilton having alcohol is a private issue when it is done in private.  Obviously it wasn't done in private, or he would not have caught and reported.  Hamilton being sober and healthy is important to fans that pay to watch him play, and it is important to the Texas Rangers who pay him a lot to stay healthy (in all aspects) and perform well on the field.

Young Harl$, thanks for being honest.  People that think this is no big deal are naive.  Yes, it's a private issue.  But, he was drinking where someone could see him (in public).  People pay a lot of money to watch him play baseball.  The Texas Rangers pay him a lot of money to play baseball and to stay healthy enough (in all aspects) to perform well.  This IS a story.
