Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has a past that isn't a secret to any baseball fan. He battled drug and alcohol addiction for years and then came back from them to become one of baseball's most recognizable stars.

Unfortunately, according to the Dallas Morning News, Hamilton relapsed and drank alcohol this week in the Dallas area. If the initial report wasn't enough, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is also reporting the relapse.

Also, the Rangers have released this statement: "We are aware of a situation, but we don't have further comment at this time."

Hamilton is without an "accountability coach" at present. This isn't the first time he's relapsed, either. Back in 2009, he drank in excess and some photos of him surfaced on Deadspin.com. Hamilton would say, at the time:

"It just crossed my mind that night, 'Can I have a drink?' Obviously I can't and this reinforces that. Since that night, I have not had another thought like that. I know it's something I shouldn't do because it leads to other things." (Dallasnews.com)

Hamilton is a free agent after the 2012 season.

UPDATE: Katie Hamilton, Josh's wife, has posted the following message on Twitter:

“Truly appreciate all the encouraging & supportive tweets we've been getting. God is Faithful and forgives- so thankful that you all are showing us such love and encouragement during this time.”

UPDATE II: Hamilton spoke for a bit over 10 minutes in a press conference and came clean.

CommonsensePLZ...

You'll find that trying to type from underneath a rock is simply a no-go. I'm typing from my apartment in New York, thank you very much...
Well, I'm real glad that life turned out so well for your dad. Not that you would ever know if he didn't have a drink every here and there anyway, but I won't further disturb your peace of confidence there. Since you like reference points so much, I got one for ya. I've been through rehab myself, three times, all through my last two years of high school, including countless AA meetings. My father also has undergone alcoholism rehab. Ahh seems like I do have an Fin clue what I'm talking about, seems like I'm the expert now, huh? There's a "shadow of doubt" for ya.

Well, anyway, I spent time sober, and I spent times getting wasted. I went almost a full year sober once. I HAVE seen both sides of the coin. And one of the things you'll find when, you know, you're not LIVING UNDER A ROCK, is that normal people are able to have a drink or smoke a joint here and there. People can relax from time to time. We don't live in a world where common people are clean, we live in a world where common people have demons. And if you are an addict who needs to be rehabilitated, responsible substance USE (not abuse) is the final and most important step to re-integrating into the society around you.

So, I eventually became a casual user again;couple years later, when my father entered alcoholism rehab, he spent an entire family vacation in Ireland sober, and when he got back home, worked himself back into a routine where he could socially drink again. Today, my father remains the same he was, a corporate lawyer making six digits; I have grown into twice the man I was since I began using again, now a deans' list student at PSU (get your Paterno jokes out of the way here). SO HOW YA LIKE THEM APPLES?!?!?!

So, I'm real glad I could do you such a favor, hopefully raise awareness to the rock you've been living under. Look up, its' life, you might miss it

Well I am a Reds fan and they took a chance on him.  They did pay for a 24 hour baby sitter for him.  He sure would look good in the reds OF but is he a ticking time bomb?  At least he tries to stay sober unlike some others like Manny.  Good luck to you Josh.

I dont think its necessarily a bad thing that the media is reporting this, they arent trying to slam the guy, I think people genuinely care about this guy's issues and want him to get better. Yes Josh Hamilton is a rich athlete, but the problems he went through with drugs and alcohol make him more of a normal guy, someone the average joe can relate to. I dont know what the statistics are, but Id bet atleast 1 in 3 people suffer from some form of addiction or other similar issues. Hamilton gives a lot of people hope, some actual proof that you can win the battle with your inner demons.

Truth is, if you got those demons in you, you cant ever get rid of them, just lock them up deep inside. Hamilton won the battle in 2009, but those demons are persistent and they've attacked again. The war will be life long, and you just gotta take it one battle at a time. I think Hamilton will bounce back, hes got the support of friends, family and teammates. The positive thing about the media reporting on this relapse is that the fans will be able to show their support again, and that will really help him. There will be more pressure on him to recover, but that can be a positive thing.

I choose not to eat fast food because I prefer health over taste.  Those people don't.  It is a personal choice.  It is not society's responsibility to take care of people who choose to harm themselves.  YOu may be the first, and hopefully last, person to quote Rosie on these boards.
stuckinnj4... just wanted to let you reread your post.  Pot.  Kettle.  Black.

It's not society's responsibility to take care of people who choose to harm themselves?  Then why is heroin illegal?  Society exhibits numerous attempts of stopping people from harming themselves.  We don't allow drugs, we tax the heck out of cigarettes, we made a huge deal out of trans fat, we require certain foods for school lunches (even in high school where students can make their own nutrition decisions), bartenders aren't allowed to serve someone they deem as intoxicated... these are all attempts to stop people from harming themselves.

I'm not saying we should or shouldn't, but the only things that seperates your claim from the heroin claim is the fact that heroin is illegal... and it's only illegal b/c society has deemed that they should take responsibility to stop people from harming themselves.
