Cecil Fielder

By C. Trent Rosecrans

After Prince Fielder signed with the Tigers, his father, former big-leaguer Cecil Fielder, said his relationship with his son had improved. On Friday, Fielder was singing a different tune before he was inducted into the Ted Williams Hall of Fame in Florida.

"But I do not know if it's improving," Cecil Fielder said of his relationship with his son, according to the Detroit Free Press. "I worry how he's grown as a man."

Fielder said he wouldn't go to his son's games in Detroit, even though the elder Fielder played for the Tigers under owner Mike Ilitch. Fielder said his son had him "thrown out" of the family room in Turner Field in Atlanta a couple of years ago.

"I'm not going nowhere around it," Fielder told the newspaper. "Mr. Ilitch is my man, but there's been some awful [stuff]. I don't want to get in the position where he throws me out of the damn stadium. I'll have a chance to see him on TV."

Fielder also said his son has hid behind agent Scott Boras.

"I say he has to grow up, and sooner or later, he will grow up," he said.

During his introductory news conference in Detroit, Prince Fielder danced around questions about his dad. The two have famously had a falling out, but when Prince signed in Detroit, there had been talk that the relationship between the two had improved. It doesn't sound like that's the case. The younger Fielder has dodged questions about his dad for several years, but at least he's consistent.

Fielders' relationship still strained

How much trouble has Cecil Fielder gotten into since he became a professional baseball player?  Gambling problems, divorce & estranged relationship with his son?  I haven't heard any stories of him being an alcoholic, drug addict or criminal.

And during the same amount of time what have we heard negative about Prince what so ever?? NOT A THING...
Oh, he doesnt want to talk to his dad who abandoned him even though millions of people want to make it their business when its not feel they should kiss and make up. That doesnt count. Cecil had many run-ins with teamates and coaches also, there is a reason he bounced around so much. You saint the dude because he hasnt had a conviction or a dependancy?? Terrible comment.

Fielders' relationship still strained

How much trouble has Cecil Fielder gotten into since he became a professional baseball player?  Gambling problems, divorce & estranged relationship with his son?  I haven't heard any stories of him being an alcoholic, drug addict or criminal.

I think that there are far worse humans in the world of professional sports than Cecil Fielder.  We hear these stories EVERYDAY!!!  Most of us, humans, sports fans, members of this website, have fathers or are fathers and we have some kind of insight about father/son relationships.  So, we feel that we can comment or share our opinion.  That doesn't mean we are taking sides or "judging" Prince or Cecil.

Should we, as a society, clone babies and have them raised by random strangers throughout their lives, with no need for a father or a mother.  Most of us value our parents and as parents value our children.  That doesn't stop when the child becomes an adult.  So, we see this issue, this conflict, as an important factor in determining our opinion of these people.  Prince Fielder is in the spotlight.  He chose to be there for the MONEY!!!!  Therefore, questions will be asked that he might not want to answer.  But, the reality is that it is not out of line for the questions to be asked.  If he has an alocohol problem, questions will be asked and articles will be written.  If he has an affair, questions will be asked and articles will be written.

Whoever says that Prince Fielder will have reached this point in his career without his father is very stupid and naive!!  Prince IS standing on his father's shoulders!  And he will be standing on his father's shoulders FOREVER!!  The $214 million is partially a result of the work his dad put in.  Even if they never had a relationship, Cecil's accomplishments have paved the way for Prince.  Scouts, GM & coaches in baseball look for pedigree probably more than any other sport.  Also as mentioned previously Prince had privileged access to ML coaches, players, stadiums, facilities that VERY FEW youngster ever have, thanks to BIG DADDY CECIL FIELDER!

I don't know Cecil Fielder personally but there are far worse people and athletes that have been forgiven and allowed back into a family circle.  Regardless of what is actually going on, from my point of view, it seems that Prince is the one that is holding a grudge, is immature, and too arrogant to forgive the person that "HELPED" make his amazing career and financial fortune happen.  And another thing, Cecil Fielder IS the grandpa to Prince's children.  Doesn't that count for anything?

I guess a lot of fans are too young to remember Cecil Fielder as a player.  He was very likeable, had spirit and charisma, and helped revive the game with his awesome display of power.

ok agreed redwings, maybe i should change what i said then. what i really was trying to get at isw, nobody on these boards, me or you included, has any idea of what really is going on between the 2. so to say someone is right or wrong is totally off base. if someone is taking a side and calling someone out its totally based on opinion or biased nature. thats what i meant. even though i dont like peioples personal lives geting interupted by the media and fans, i understand that thats just the nature of it hwen you make 10 and 20 and hundreds of millions. just for people to say prince is a baby and this and that is just so ignorant. because you have no idea what the two are going through.

One thing i can say on this though is atleast prince is consistantly shying away from answers about his dad. and his dad didnt have to personally attack though the media him by saying "I say he has to grow up, and sooner or later, he will grow up," he said. or the "hiding behind boras crap". obviously he isnt hiding behind boras he got money on a good team. its not like werth who jumped on the first big offer even though it came from a celler dwellar(although that may change as soon as this year). he wanted rangers really bad because he knew they could win. now that he got a huge deal from a team that can win he took it. i dont think he ever wanted to be in washington even though they are looking good as well. we all can say detroit and texas are both much more stocked to win a ring in the coming years.

anyone of you who even give your opinion on this, no matter which side your on, is so totally out of line. these kind of reports should never even be written.

Yeah sure... and TMZ shouldn't exist and the Papparazzi shouldn't exist either.  And while we're at it when these guys step outside with their families fans shouldn't bother them for autographs either.

But that's not reality.  Maybe it's reality in your world, but not in the real world.  These guys are athletes, Cecil was a superstar in MLB and Prince Fielder is an even biggest superstar in MLB today.  They are no different then every other public figure out there, they are celebrities and everything they do will be reported, that's how it is and that's never going to change.

There is a trade off here, these guys aren't giving up some of their privacy and freedom for nothing.  They make millions, sometimes hundreds of millions in their careers.  Prince Fielder isn't even 30 yet but he could retire if he wanted to and if he takes care of his money with more cash then anybody on these boards is likely to even dream of seeing.   They live the life of a king and even if they play until they're 40 years old have half their lives to do everything they want to do without ever working another day again.

If they don't like it then as somebody else said, quit !!!!!  That's just how it is....   they have a choice.

anyone of you who even give your opinion on this, no matter which side your on, is so totally out of line. these kind of reports should never even be written. peoples family and personal life have nothing to do with the game of baseball. im pretty sure prince would have made it to where he is now without CECIL. anyone who hits 35 or more Hr's a year and over 100 rbi's while hitting close to .300 and playing EVERYDAY will earn his, Cecil's son or not. Prince has every right to not wanna speak to his father and every right to not answer to all the media and losers who bring up the SAME questions over and over.

im not saying prince is right, and  im not saying cecil is either. what i am saying is it's their business and nobody knows whats REALLY going on....

redwings, but his dad shouldnt have gotten himself in the position he got himself in.  his dad was just trying to fix his own problems by using his son.  thats sad

Luis.  We're all entitled to our own opinions, you have yours and I have mine.   If it's my dad he doesn't have to worry about fixing his problems because I guarantee you I'm fixing all of his financial problems and my dad will live well the rest of his life.  Maybe it doesn't happen overnight but I can guarantee you I could never live the great life financially and watch my parents struggle.  That's just how I am and what I believe in... family is everything to me man.  Everything..... in the overall realm of things money means nothing.

Fielders' relationship still strained

A lot of people in this thread seem to have easy solutions to a situation they know nothing about.  None of know enough to judge the situation between these guys- who's right and who's wrong.  But I can respect that Prince doesn't want to air his dirty laundry out in the media.  There's nothing wrong with that.

The only thing more pathetic and stupid than a father and son not speaking to each other, is a bloodsucking writer making a paycheck dredging it up.
