Brad Penny is indeed headed to Japan, agreeing to a deal with the Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League, according to the team's official website.

FREE AGENT TRACKER

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun (via NPB Tracker), Penny signed a one-year deal worth $3 million plus performance bonuses, however, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweets the deal is worth $4 million with another $3.5 million in performance bonuses and a $4.5 million mutual option for 2013. It's the largest contract given to an American pitcher without prior NPB experience, Rosenthal added in another tweet. Sanspo (again, via NPB Tracker) notes Penny will leave for Japan this week in time to do join the team's camp on Feb. 9.

NPB Tracker suggests Penny will be expected to fill the No. 2 spot in the Hawks rotation, which lost three starters from 2011.

Penny, 33, was 11-11 with a 5.30 ERA for the Tigers last season, making just one appearance in the ALCS, giving up five runs in what was already a rout in the deciding Game 6 against the Rangers.

A two-time All-Star, Penny has a career record of 119-99 with a 4.23 ERA in parts of 12 seasons with the Dodgers, Marlins, Giants, Cardinals, Red Sox and Tigers. He was third in Cy Young voting as a member of the Dodgers in 2007 when he went 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA.

Why not go to a new country and enjoy a new culture and still play the game we all love.  Money is good,  WHY NOT.  Plus you get away from all these lazy over opinionated fat Americans who obviously dont think to highley of you anyways

I'm surprised The A's didn't offer 2.5-3 mil for one season - they need pitching and he could probably give them some quality starts and eat up a few innings.  Plenty of teams could have made an offer - baltimore, San Diego, Houston, KC, Mets!  Cheap money for a 4-5 starter.

I AM SURPRISED THAT A LEGITIMATE #3/4 MLB PITCHER WITH PENNY'S EXPERIENCE WOULD SIGN WITH A JAPANESE TM AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 33 AND FOR ONLY $3 M.....ARM PROBLEMS ????......I WOULD THINK EVEN THE SD PADRES WOULD MATCH THAT SALARY AND THE NY YANKEES PAY $6 M......PENNY'S PERFORMANCE WILL GIVE US A BETTER EVALUATION OF JAPANESE TALENT....I HOPE CBSSPORTS GIVES US UPDATES ON HIS PERFORMANCE AS THE YEAR PROGRESSES.

The year before giants won the world series Penny joined the team in a late stage drive that resulted in the giants finishing second..during that offseason Penny who the giants tried to resign went to the cardinals saying they had the better shot of winning a championship and he further made an insult to the giant saying they do not have the hitting to win anything....welll his prediction was wrong there as they won in 2010 and then was wrong the following year  being that the cardinals wion it following the year without penny.  Penny predictions are worth squat.
