The Mariners have agreed signed left-handed reliever Hong-Chih Kuo to a one-year deal, CBSSports.com insider Jon Heyman confirms. The contract is for $500,000, but becomes $1 million if Kuo makes the active roster and could grow to $2.25 million with incentives.

Kuo, 30, was dominant from 2008-2010 with the Dodogers, putting up a 1.96 ERA over those three seasons in 133 games and a WHIP of 0.953, striking out 201 batters in 170 innings. Last year, though, Kuo struggled and was put on the disabled list twice, once for back strain and another stint with what was described as an anxiety disorder. Kuo appeared in 40 games and had an ERA of 9.00 in 27 innings. While his strikeout rate stayed high, striking out 36 of the 127 batters he faced, but had 23 walks, the most he had since 2006, despite pitching in the fewest innings since his first year in the United States. His WHIP was 1.741 after recording a 0.783 WHIP in 2010.

Kuo has a history of elbow injuries, undergoing multiple injuries on his left elbow throughout his career, including one after the 2011 season.

cheap flyer and when you cant sign Pujols sometimes that is all that is left. I like it if he can even be 80% of what he was. Remember those were major leager hitters he dominated for back to back seasons

Mariners to sign Hong-Chih Kuo

I am a life long Mariner fan. With tha being said It's time for new ownership. I am not a racist but with this ownership all they do is sign asians that are 30+ broken down coming off injury or guys looking to milk out 1 or 2 more seasons. If they are only going to sign native countrymen then sign younger ones who arent' coming off injuries. Darvish??????? Dice K. (That would have back fired) But come on this is ridiculous. I may have a lot people hating on me for this coment but if your from seattle or know about there operations you would understand my frustration.

Mariners to sign Hong-Chih Kuo

on paper this looks like a questionable signing....back problems, anxiety disorder, era of 9 and a 1.74 whip.  hey, in REAL LIFE this
seems like a questionable signing. i hope this was a MINOR LEAGUE contract...or maybe the mariner's GM has a great crystal ball.
we'll see.
