Josh Hamilton

First off, the Rangers don't want Shayne Kelley to be called Josh Hamilton's "accountability coach" -- Kelley is a "Major League staff assistant" with more or less one player to coach.

The Rangers hired the former Royals minor-league strength assistant on Tuesday, but general manager Jon Daniels made sure to dismiss the term previously applied to Johnny Narron and, briefly, Michael Dean Chadwick, Hamilton's father-in-law.

"I don't know where that [term] came from … Josh is accountable for himself," Daniels told MLB.com. "Our aim is to support him and put him in a position to succeed. If you hire an interpreter for somebody, the guy is still responsible for what he says. Josh is still accountable for himself."

Narron, the brother of Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron, had been by Hamilton's side since 2007, when Hamilton joined the Reds' organization -- and stayed with him even after his brother, Jerry, was fired as the team's manager. When Hamilton was traded to Texas, Narron went too. However, Narron left his job with the Rangers in November to become the Brewers hitting coach. Chadwick was hired in January, but backed out of the position less than two weeks later.

While without an aide or whatever else it is they want to call it, Hamilton had a relapse with alcohol. Hamilton is an admitted drug and alcohol addict. After his relapse became public, Hamilton met with doctors from Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Kelley was also along for the meeting, according to the newspaper. MLB hasn't decided if Hamilton will face disciplinary action from the relapse, which could be deemed a violation of his previous terms of reinstatement from previous suspensions. Daniels said he expected any such discipline "unlikely."

Kelley spent last season as a high school baseball coach, but has served as an assistant at Samford and Jacksonville State in Alabama. He was an assistant coach and team chaplain for the University of Alabama from 1996-99 and then served in Kansas City's minor-league system as a strength and conditioning coach for three years.

Hamilton had no previous relationship with Kelley, who came recommended by Hamilton's agent, Michael Moye, and Rangers vice-president Chuck Morgan, whose son was at Alabama with Kelley. Daniels said Kelley will have duties with the rest of the team in addition to Hamilton.

Rangers hire assistant for Josh Hamilton

Someone is shopping a videotape allegedly showing Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, on the night of his recent relapse,
having sex in the bathroom of Sherlock's, a Dallas bar. A local television station was offered the tape for $41,000, an employee at the station tells us. The station declined, and we're told no one there actually watched the tape.

According to our source, reporters from the station met with employees and customers at Sherlock's the day after news of Hamilton's relapse broke. Eyewitnesses reported seeing Hamilton go into the restroom with a woman while an employee of the restaurant blocked the entrance, according to the TV station's employee. Some customers were able to peek into the bathroom. Our source says anywhere from six to 10 people at the pub saw Hamilton enter the restroom.

One eyewitness approached our source and told him he had a seven-second clip from his phone that showed Hamilton having sex in the stall of the men's bathroom. The station immediately refused.

A few minutes later, another person who claimed to have pictures of the incident tried to sell those to the station for $10,000.

"Had we been interested," the TV station employee says, "I'm sure they would have given us some watermarked photos or something from the video."

I pray for his family! They are the real losers in this saga.

Well, I don't believe that you actually pray for his family, but I am glad to see that someone, besides me, mentions the family.
Hopes and prayers are obviously wasted on Josh.

If they aren't already gone, need to get those kids away from him ASAP.

Reach down inside Josh and think about someone else for a change. Like your family. Everytime you reach for a drink, think about what you are putting your family through. He thinks everytime he gets caught drinking, he can come clean and say Im sorry. So sad! I pray for his family! They are the real losers in this saga.

I love how so many people feel the need to judge others without knowing all the information about a situation,

You mean, make comments without all the information, which you just did?

I wonder how much the job pays?

Look at the perks, 4 months off, travel first class, top notch hotels, visit
great restaurants and bars all over the country, hot chick around all the time.
Great seats for 162 games a year.

I'd baby-sit this crack-head for $100K per year.

I have met Josh... he was very open with his problems and took accountablility for his mistakes.  He mentioned that he constantly needs help and people holding him accountable to stay clean and that every minute of the day it can be a struggle. I am sure he welcomes the help especially after hearing the stories of his dark times and his desire not to repeat that.  I for one am praying for him and hope he stays clean for his family and himself... not just to produce on a baseball field but to live a life that he would want to with his family.

Great comment.

I think what makes him such a fan favorite is because the way he gets himself back up.  Everyone falls it is the way you get up that counts.

I would hope that he give the Rangers a hometown discount because they have earned it.     &n

First of all, I thinks its grat that Hamilton is willing to have someone hired to help him stay clean

I highly doubt they gave Hamilton much of a choice at all.  The Rangers are trying to protect their investment, if Hamilton tries to fight them on this the next time he screws up the Rangers could potentially suspend and stop paying him.

Most addicts ( I know Josh's problem is with alcohol) accept no responsibility for their actions, always have someone else to blame and make no efforts to get help and stay clean.

In my lifetime I've met and known many addicts, every single one of them make "excuses" and every single one of them don't take responsibility for their actions.  But the addicts i knew didn't have the support Josh Hamilton has or millions of dollars coming in annuall with the potential to make another hundred million or more in the next 5 or 6 years.  That's very likely why Josh is so eager to accept help right now.....too much to lose

I hope to God that is coming out of his pocket and not the Rangers.
Since the Rangers have other duties for Kelley, I doubt Hamilton pays his salary.  Beside why should the player have to pay?  The team has hired an interpreter for Darvish; Patrick Ewing works primarily as Dwight Howard's instructor; Kareem worked primarily as Andrew Bynum's instructor.  This type of thing happens everywhere, all the time.  This is just a different type of assistance.
