'Oil Can' Boyd pitched under influence of cocaine

Remember former Red Sox pitcher Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd? He also pitched for the Expos and Rangers, but the overwhelming majority of his career was with the Boston Red Sox. He was a significant part of the rotation on the 1986 World Series team. He also evidently liked to pitch while under the influence of cocaine.

“Some of the best games I’ve ever, ever pitched in the major leagues I stayed up all night; I’d say two-thirds of them,” said Boyd (CBS Boston), after admitting that he was under the influence of cocaine "in every ballpark" he'd ever pitched.

Oil Can wasn't done, saying not all his teammates did enough to help him:

“All of them didn’t rally around me,” he explained (CBS Boston). “All of them knew and the ones that cared came to me. The Dwight Evans and Bill Buckners… It was the veteran ball players. Some guys lived it… They knew what you were doing, and the only way they knew was they had to have tried it too.”

And that race was part of the issue:

“The reason I caught the deep end to it is because I’m black. The bottom line is the game carries a lot of bigotry, and that was an easy way for them to do it,” Boyd said (CBS Boston). “If I wasn’t outspoken and a so-called a ‘proud black man,’ maybe I would have gotten the empathy and sympathy like other ballplayers got that I didn’t get; like Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Steve Howe. I can name 50 people that got third and fourth chances all because they weren’t outspoken black individuals.”

Boyd, 52, was 78-77 with a 4.04 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 799 strikeouts in 10 major-league seasons. He has a book -- "They Call Me Oil Can" -- coming out this summer.

He should thank cocaine and the other players who didnt do enough otherwise he wouldnt have pitched,  “Some of the best games I’ve ever, ever pitched in the major league".

Steve Howe? Not an outspoken black individual?

Can't wait for the book. How many guys write a book with a career record of 78-77? If he thought nobody cared about him back then wait until the book comes out, people will be flocking to not care about him.

Just when you think the game can't get any worse: w/ the steroid era producing players that broke some the most cherished sports records of all time season and career HR totals (which is still not over, MVP Braun....), pervious lock-outs, all star game tie, the gap growing between the super rich (yanks, sox, tigers) and the "50 feet of crap" dirt poor teams (like the royals and A's), sox players drinking and snacking in the dugout, yankees building a stadium w/ an outfield shorter than most minor league outfields and luxury boxes for a single game costing more than TWO years of season tickets of smaller marker teams, Pete Rose, the MLB's all time hits leader, STILL not in the HOF because of gambling AFTER he retired as a player, and now the player with the best nickname in the games history (imo) pitched on coke...... just makes you wonder what will be next.... dare I say it, Cubs winning the world series????

'Oil Can' Boyd proud?

This bozo told everyone back when he was playing he got his nickname growing up in Tupelo Mississippi because they referred to cans of beer as "oil cans".  Are we supposed to be surprised he was doing lines back then?  I bet he's broke now.  Oh yea, he was also a scab player.

Is Oil Can trying to say that Strawberry and Gooden weren't black?  This is as stupid as the white reporter who asked Doug Williams how long he had been a black quarterback.  Racism sucks, and I think Tiger Woods has endured as much as any athlete in history, but Oil Can is way off base here.

Besides, Strawberry did time, and Gooden took a lot of heat.  It's not like either got off with no consequences for their actions.  Steve Howe was one of the first drug scapegoats in MLB, too.  At this point, Oil Can needs to be Bleep Canned.
