Yoenis Cespedes

By C. Trent Rosecrans

The starting point, it appears, for Cuban center fielder Yoenis Cespedes is $40 million.

A report on Cafe Fuerte, a Spanish-language blog based in South Florida, quotes a source as saying the Marlins offered Cespedes a six-year, $40 million contract. It also said he has no immediate plans to meet any other teams. However, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald tweeted that he's heard the Marlins' offer was less than the $40 million reported by Cafe Fuerte.

Cespedes visited Miami earlier this week and then returned to the Dominican Republic on Thursday. During his visit, Cespedes told reporters he'd like to play for the Marlins.

The 26-year-old outfielder has drawn the interest of not only the Marlins, but also the Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Orioles and Indians.

You speak of the Tigers like they have been a model franchise for decades. I can recall less then a decade ago that the Tigers were the laughing stock of the AL Central. Tigers defense could be the difference maker very similar to the results of the Patriots season in the NFL.

Never once did I say the Tigers were a model franchise for decades.  You're one of those people ( haters) making an argument that doesn't exist, just for the sake of arguing.    This thread wasn't about the Tigers and I never made it about the Tigers, it's immature children like you that can't handle a fan of a team you hate commenting on these boards.  And for the record that's your problem and something you have to deal with because that problem isn't going away on its own.  I think it's time you grow up, at least just a little bit

Report: Marlins offer Cespedes $40 million

Realisticly Ichiro and Daisuke have been the only ones to live up to any expectations ever since the crazy bidding wars for unproven Internationals started.  The pattern dictates that they should never enter crazy multi-million dollar commitments ever.  MLB GMs are to short-sighted to understand the enormous luck involved in getting your team's moneys worth.
Actually Ichiro and Hideki Matsui were the only ones to live up to expectations. Dice-K came over and had one good year in 08 - his second in the big leagues and the only year his ERA was under 4. Now, allbeit his contract was only $50/6 yrs I believe the extra $50 mill it took to even negotiate is the proposterous aspect of the whole process. As international players whether they're Cuban, Dominican, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, etc. any contract worth a substantial amount of money is risky. Now we have Darvish and possibly Cespedes coming in this season to really put this moniker to the test. Make no mistake about it however, both teams, the Rangers and Marlins need these players. The Rangers with losing key SP and failing to clinch the WS for the second straight year and the Marlins opening a new stadium and trying to give the franchise a new look, I guess we see how far their owners are willing to go to bring in more revenue for themselves and at the same time become or remain competitive. But seriously how much is enough when our own country is amidst economic turmoil?

Why don't you come back to spout crap about the Tigers after your team decides to actually invest some money into the team instead of just pocketing the luxury tax money. Seriously, a Royals fan talking smack about the Tigers.

Report: Marlins offer Cespedes $40 million

Tiger fans should be more concerned by the prospect of Cabrera at third base to make way for Fielder at first.  Instantaneously the worst defensive infield in baseball.  I'm a Miggy fan and Prince is all right but somebody's gotta be a DH.  It'll be embarassing when the opposition bats around and does nothing but bunt and Tigers can't get an out.

Huh?  Listen, Miggy might not win a gold glove at 3rd but he's a lot more athletic then some people think he is. He made tremendous strides and played very good D at first last year.  He's been working out and getting ready for 3rd base all winter, he'll be just fine.  As for Fielder he's more then just "all right", he's a superstar.  And he's not a defensive liability at all at first base.  By the way Delmon Young will DH.  He had over 100 rbi's 2 years ago and he had 32 rbi's in 40 games with the Tigers last year.

There will be nothing embarassing about the Tigers this year.... wait and see.
