Canseco earns tryout with Mexican team

Shockingly unable to get a deal with the A's by asking on Twitter, Jose Canseco is headed to Mexico in an attempt to restart his baseball career.

Canseco, 47, earned a tryout with the Quintana Roo Tigers of the Mexican League, the team announced on Sunday.

The former MVP and Rookie of the Year had taken to Twitter to beg A's general manager Billy Beane for a tryout earlier this offseason. Beane, obviously, didn't bite.

Canseco last played in the majors in 2001 for the White Sox and in the minor leagues for the White Sox in 2002. In parts of 17 seasons Canseco hit .266/.353/.515 with 462 home runs, in a career he's admitted was aided greatly by steroids.

Last year, Canseco played in 64 games with the Yuma Scorpions of the North American Baseball League, hitting .256/.371/.427 with eight home runs. He played in other independent leagues in 2001, 2006 and 2010.

Canseco took to Twitter on Sunday to confirm the news.

I admire Jose Canseco.  I have no harsh words for him at all.  I hope he has fun and plays well.  Thank you Jose for all the memories; you were extremely fun to watch, to root for, to root against.  May the baseball gods, as well as the fans, forgive you for cheating and enjoy the good memories of the true spectacle of sports entertainment you provided.

Just ride off into the sunset Mr. Roid-aholic/Egomaniac. Your day in the sun has long come and gone. You pissed it away trying to gain an edge on your fellow players. If you make this team you'll just be taking a roster space away from some deserving kid who actually could a future in the game of baseball. Go home!

The guy loves the game of baseball and at 47 years old still can play somewhere and all you people who couldnt even understand the love of the game just sit here and bash him for it.  Shame on you fools and tools.  I love baseball and only wish at 30 I could still play but injuries cut my career short.  This man is lucky to be able to still play at his age and hes doing what he lives to do.  Play baseball.  Can any of you say you are paid to do what you love?  NOT A CHANCE IN HECK ON THAT!

No, they don't test for steroids. In fact, they have steroid vending machines at all the stadiums.

Canseco earns tryout with Mexican team

People can make fun of Jose Canseco all they want and hate his guts for outting other baseball players. Fact remains he was one of the most exciting and dynamic baseball players from 1986 until the mid 1990's. He had one of the strongest and fastest swings I have ever seen. Sure he ratted people out about their steroid usage but so what. He was being used as the scape goat for baseball and blamed for a lot of things when it came to steroids while others got to hide. So what did he do? Brought the other folks he helped with their careers into it.

A large percentage of the stuff in his book I completely believe. The numbers for players he helped increased a great deal once Canseco was on the team assisting them with their steroid usage. McGwire is a pansy that lied for years about his steroid usage and never had the guts to be a man and admit his faults. I like that Canseco is still trying to play baseball. I kind of wish Billy Beane would let him try out for the Athletics because Canseco would probably be one of the main HR hitters. LOL Oakland has no power. Good luck Jose and I wish you the best down in Mexico.
