White Sox add Kosuke Fukudome

Kosuke Fukudome is headed back to Chicago -- but this time the Japanese outfielder will be playing for the White Sox.

The team announced it signed Fukudome to a one-year deal worth $1 million with an option for 2013. He will earn $500,000 in 2012, but the total package is worth at least $1 million because of the $500,000 buyout for 2013's $3.5 million option.

Fukudome, 34, hit .262/.342/.370 for the Indians and Cubs last season, his fourth season in the big leagues. Fukudome was a disappointment for Chicago after signing a four-year, $48 million deal before the 2008 season. Fukudome has a career .361 on-base percentage, but his .260 batting average and average of just more than 10 homers a year was hardly sexy -- or what anyone would expect for $48 million.

Fukudome gives the White Sox a little more depth in the outfield, which has Alex Rios in center, with young, promising players Dayan Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza on either side of him. Rios and Viciedo are both right-handed hitters, so Fukudome gives the team some more flexibility and De Aza can also play center.

Dan Johnson, Fukadome. At least it's not like KW is signing another Adam Dunn for $48 mil. Still, Fielder signing with Detroit put every team in the Central trying to catch up.

I think this is a good insurance policy and a decent left handed bat off the bench. Lets be honest, Fukudome plays an above average right field and can only help the pitching staff out with his glove. At the price that Kenny Williams got him, I think its a good move because even if he doesn't hit well (again), he will at least see a lot of pitches and runs the bases well.

This is actually not a bad signing by the Sox.I was hoping the Tribe might re-sign him.
He was actually pretty decent fill-in when Choo was out.He would have been a great back-up for Cleveland w/ all the IF's
they are dealing with.

wow living in chicago i got to see him play alot......and boy did he suck.....he never seemed to do anything......when cleveland got him last year, i was wondering what were the indians thinking...then i remembered ...its the indians....yeah 1 million is a bargain now days....BUT id pay another team a million just to not have him on my team....waste of a roster spot in my opinion.....shows what the market was like for him...1 million? to the white sox? to not even start? at least its only 1 year, but i think its funny the white sox are signing the cubs leftover garbage.

;     &nbs
p;   How did he get by the New York Mets? 1 million is the kind of money that the Mets look to spend on players. You mean to tell me that this guy couldn't help the Mets coming off the bench or starting once in awhile? He plays good defense and he does hit in very important times in the game.

First of all, Jordan Danks hasn't been a Baron for 3 years now, and won't be one this year. He will be in Chicago, Charlotte, or gone.

I'm OK with this signing. For 1 million it's worth the risk. The Sox have no OF prospects except Viciedo who will make the team anyway. So Fukudome is replacing nobody.

The Sox are woeful in depth, so he may help a little there. He is not gonna be used everyday unless there is an injury. He can pinch run I suppose, though I don't consider him a good baserunner. He's just a veteran guy who will take pressure off of Lillibridge. That's really about it.

chris_brown  Um, first of all, John Danks is a major league pitcher for the White Sox, and may just be their #1 starter. Clearly you are trying to make a reference to his brother, Jordan Danks. Unfortunately, Jordan was not listed among the White Sox top 20 prospects - so, I do not think he is having his playing time stolen by Fukudome, unless the Sox send Kosuke to the Birmingham Barons. As for Mitchell - he suffered a significant injury two years ago and is still trying to get himself back to where he was when he arrived from LSU, which is nowhere near U.S. Cellular Field. Kenny Williams has struggled of late, but by signing a solid - not a star - but a solid outfielder for a bargain price of only $1M, he has provided depth for an outfield that has two starters that have never played a full season in the majors (De Aza and Viciedo) and another guy that has just plain sucked (Rios). This signing will not sell tickets, and obviously, he is no Prince Fielder - not the talent, nor the heavy pricetag, but this is a solid pick-up and gives the Sox some insurance at a position that could be a real weakness if the other three guys don't all work out. Nice pick-up.
