Just a few days ago, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he expected left fielder Carl Crawford to miss a few weeks to start the 2012 season. Crawford had surgery on his left wrist a month ago, so having him miss some time wouldn't be altogether shocking. Monday, however, Crawford surprised his new manager, who may have spoken too soon late last week.

"I didn't know (Carl) was there," Valentine said (ESPN Boston). "I walked around the corner and he was throwing the ball. It was great to see him. His health looks much better than I expected. (I was) pleasantly surprised."

And Crawford doesn't want to miss any games.

"I definitely don't want to miss any games. That's my goal right now."' said Crawford (ESPN Boston), noting that the odds of him being in the opening-day lineup are good.

After signing a seven-year, $142 million contract, the four-time All-Star hit .255/.289/.405 with just 65 runs and 18 steals. In 2010 for the Rays, Crawford hit .307/.356/.495 with 13 triples, 19 homers, 110 runs, 90 RBI and 47 stolen bases.

If Crawford does miss time, Cody Ross and Ryan Sweeney would man the corner outfield spots, flanking center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. If all goes as planned for Crawford, though, Ross and Sweeney will be battling for the right field job from the outset.

OK, I did laugh at your opening and you are correct, I shouldnt stoop...nuff said about that. Next, the REDSOX players are NOT "four times" better than the Rays players...that is a homer statement and has NO factual basis whatsoever. Beckett and Lester are great pitchers, no doubt...they are not 4 times better than Shields and Price. Your 3,4,5 starters are not 4 times better than Hellickson, Neimann, Davis and possibly Matt Moore. No, our pitching staff is better than yours. Is Adrian G 4 times better than Pena? He'll hit .078 better than him but Im betting the HR's, RBI's and BB's will be close...maybe he's twice as good. Pedroia vs. Zobrist? 1.5 times as good. SS is a wash. 3B - an aging and oft injured Youkillis vs Longoria...Im gonna give this one to EvaN. RF -Joyce vs your platooners...again, pretty close to even, maybe, maybe a slight nod to Matt. CF - Ellsbury vs Upton. Too bad this isnt based on potential. Defensively they are equal but Id give the advantage to Ellsbury because of his effort. LF - Crawford vs Jennings...and it kills me to print this but yeah, Carl is 2 1/2 - 3 times better than Jennings right now...Jennings is just as fast, had more SB, 15 homeruns and a higher BA than CC and he only played half a season in the Bigs last year...it'll be interesting to see what this year shows.

The Trop really isnt all that bad, Ive been to a dozen ballparks and while it doesnt hold a candle to Atlanta or Baltimore or Detroits new parks, its a decent venue. Its better than Toronto, in my humble opinion.

As for your last statement regarding the Rays "only making the playoffs because they will get the second courtesy Wild Card spot...thats hogwash and frankly, you know it. The Rays beat the REDSOX 10 or 11 of 16 games last season head to head. The RAYS won the wildcard last season not because they were given squat but because the played hard and won it outright.

Please dont be one of those fans who cant see any bad or wrong in the team they support. Just because you or I are a fan of a certain team doesnt mean that thatteam is the BEST and has no flaws...

OK Children, time to get back to baseball!!! This is not the place for you two to be comparing size because I am sure no one cares about your short comings.

I am a long time RED SOX fan, but do agree that the Rays manager has a way of getting his players to pour their heart and soul into the gane which makes them both good and dangerous. I also agree the RED SOX should be four times better than the Rays because their players are four times better, not because our payroll is four time higher. The divison is a highly paid divsion and you and I both know the Rays woould be paying their players just the same if they could. Here is the problem for the Rays, they have a dump for a home field so no one comes to see them play. I have been to the TROP and I will never return, not even for free seats because it is a disaster.

I am not going to take anyhting away from what the Rays have been able to do the last few years and I am not concerned about if you Crawford left for money, takent or simply to play in a park where poeple actaully come to watch their team play, I am only worried about how he performs this season especially against the Rays. He will show all his wonderful talents off this year and the Rays will only make the playoffs because they will get the courtesy second Wild Card spot (as long as EVA doesn't hurt herself again)

Well that was enlightning...I didnt know that the greater Memphis area of Tennesse was the diaper capital of the world. Funny I never heard word one regarding that. Memphis is known as the Home of the Blues and has some damn good BBQ, but diapers...nope. Secondly, you did question how many games I attend at the Trop if I was a former Tigers fan/current Rays fan living in Tennessee...take a look. Oh, sorry bout your mom, dont wish that on anyone you must have been very young when she passed.

Oh, and almost anyone can copy and paste, I was doing that when you were still in diapers and I have no anger issues at all, I merely get mildly annoyed when someone comes out of left field and starts questioning my allegiances. You know, kinda like you just did.
