Pujols still objects to nickname 'El Hombre'

Albert Pujols

By C. Trent Rosecrans

When Albert Pujols was in St. Louis, he made it clear he didn't like being called by the nickname "El Hombre," even asking fans not to call him by the monicker in 2010.

Pujols said he felt it was a disrespect -- not a clever play -- of Stan Musial's nickname, "The Man." That's why it was a surprise, in St. Louis especially, when the Angels put up billboards in Southern California with Pujols' picture next to the words "El Hombre."

On Wednesday, Pujols made it clear he still doesn't like the name and didn't authorize the billboards.

"Like I say, I haven't talked to them, but I prefer not to use [El Hombre]," Pujols told Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com. "I still have the same respect for [Musial] as I had, not just waht he's done in baseball, but for what he did for his country. That's something you have to appreciate."

Musial served in the Navy during World War II and last season was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Obama.

According to the Angels, there are 20 such billboards in Southern California.

Pujols still objects to nickname 'El Hombre'

"teets3" said: I hesitate to say anything bad about Pujols for fear of being labeled merely a Cardinals fan hater.  But since you asked:

There were always rumblings about Pujols being incredibly judgmental, especially from a religious standpoint.  One example comes from a guy I know who works for Anheuser-Busch.  Apparently, Pujols was being paid to sign autographs at an A-B function.  Being that A-B makes, you know, beer, it seemed fairly predictable that alcohol might be involved with the appearance.  But Pujols saw people drinking and just walked out.

He generally had kind of a cold air about him away from the field.  But I've always thought and said that the good about him far outweighed the bad while he was here.
That is fairly accurate depiction of Albert. He's a fantastic guy, but when he gets offended by something he shuts everyone out and recoils to his private life. He is a fairly private guy for a superstar. And yes, he is very principled, but that's not a bad thing. Like I said before, I have not heard anything about him having gambling problems (like MJ) or problems keeping his dong in his pants (like ARod) or anything else like that.

The Angels are lucky to have him.

sour grapes? more like molded. of course people are angry that albert left. our management has spent the last decade building the team around him and he sold-out every1. u would be pissed too. doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that. but the thing you are to stupid to realize BEATLA, is that you are paying albert for the last 10 years instead of the next 10 years. this contract compounded w/ giving cj wilson over 70 million will WRECK  your franchise. u must be living in fantasy land if u think albert will still be playing or effective at age 42! make sure u and albert get good seat to watch the cardinals win more world series!

Sounds like sour grapes from a Rams (St. Louis - until they move back to LA) Fan! Too Bad! We got Albert and you got a resentment. I'm sure Albert would tell you 'tis better to give than to receive...!

No matter what anyone thinks, that was a very honorable thing for a player to say. its rare to see common sense in this game of fat, out of shape, money pigs. I was never a real fan of Pujols but I always respected his ability to play baseball. he is also a great community service guy. Great comment of respect Albert!.

lmao g-man....good move for the angels? lol u think paying 250+ million to a DH is a good move? so tell me, who is the protection for pujuls in the line-up? how many times has pujuls faced AL pitching?  this sell-out's ego is so big that he calls his own hit-and-runs in the world series. when it failed, he refused to talk to the media and took his toys and went home like a 4 year old. u didnt see jeter sell-out the yankees when he got upset about his contract negotiations. jeters legacy is what it important and the money like pujols. ill take the rangers over the angels in this division and take the tigers, yankees, boston for the other playoff spots. that leaves the angels on the outside looking in. baseball is a team game and cannot be won w/ 1 player. after all g-man, u are a pirate fan and i would be angry to if my team spent the last 25 years in the cellar.

Dude, you sold out for $$$$$$$$$$$$. The Angels OWN YOU. They don't need your stinking authorization!

99 Rams you angry St Louis homer.... What do you mean he "sold-out" the rest of his career to win nothing?  This was a good move for Albert in that he went to a really good team in a beautiful climate for HUGE money and at the end of his career he will be able to DH when his skills in the field diminish (which they always do eventually).  Other than the fact that you are a St Louis fan, you can't look at this objectively and see that Pujols made a pretty good play here.  Be happy for the two titles the Cardinals won while he was there.  I am a Pirates fan and I have no such joy.

notwhatuthink, i wouldnt call his departure from st. louis graceful in the slightess. this idiot just sold-out the rest of his career to win nothing and the angels sold-out the future of this team making 2 bad deals that will kill the franchise. hard for me to feel sorry for a pack of idiots. albert, go count your money and im sure your billboard drama will disappear.
