Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Josh Hamilton

By C. Trent Rosecrans

After his most recent relapse, the Rangers put their extension talks with Josh Hamilton on hold. Despite the way the Rangers have supported Hamilton through two public relapses, the former MVP said he doesn't feel like he owes the team and doesn't expect an extension before the end of the season, when he can become a free agent.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Hamilton had this to say (via the Fort Worth Star-Tribune):
"The Rangers have done a lot for me, but I've got a question for ya'll: Have I done a lot for the Rangers?" Hamilton said. "I think I've given them everything I've had, and I don't think anybody can say I haven't. When it comes down to it, what people don't understand, is this is a business.

"I love Texas, I love my fans, I love the fans of the Rangers, I love the organization, I love my teammates, I love everything about it. But I'm not going to sit here and say I owe the Rangers, because I don't feel like I owe the Rangers."
I have a good friend who is a Rangers fan and she's not happy with the comments, and I can see how Rangers fans would feel that way. On the other hand, he's been paid to do a job and he's done it. If the Rangers weren't happy with him or his ability to do it, they don't have to offer Hamilton a contract after the season -- I'm pretty sure someone else will. That's the beauty of the free market.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

CHILL OUT. You people are forgetting that this was a thread 7-10 days ago... "Does Hamilton owe the Rangers?"  Look it up.  I guarantee someone posed this dumb question to him. He owes them nothing, as I said earlier.  They owe him nothing.  Business relationship that benefitted both parties.  People (writer/columnist) are looking to stir it up... Someone asked this guy the dumb question, and he spoke candidly.  He owes them zero, as he has already produced 2 world series appearances, some titles for Texas, and helped pack that ballpark.  Keep this in mind... Hamilton is not just speaking out.  He is responding to badgering lines of questions by idiots.

I have a deep, dark feeling that something is just not right with J-Ham. I hope and pray I am wrong.

apparently you're not familiar with the properties of ADDICTION!  you cant just have one drink, you need 10, when you're an addict you just cant 'taper' off.  you have to quit completely.......

He doesn't owe them anything, sports is a business. Yes, he got a chance, but it was HIM that made the most of it. Nextly, who cares if he had a couple of drinks or relapsed here or there, as long as he's not continuing on and it impacts his play, who gives a s-h-i-t.

ps  You are3 correct, it is a business.  And winning the ring means everything.  Hit all the homers yu want.  If you don't have the ring it doesn't mean crap.

You owe the Reds and Rangers, not own them as I previousely mis typed

Dude, you own both the Reds and Rangers everything.  They took a chance on you.  The Reds dumped you before you let them down (twice.)  At least you got to sell some books.

It is obvious that I am a bigger Rangers fan than you.  I believed in you.  Here's what it comes down to:  You let the state of Texas and your fans down with your horrible play in the World Series.  You had ample times to be a hero but you let us down.  I am shocked that you are still on the team.

So a team stands behind you pretty much 100% during your slip ups and you come out and swing and say something like this?  Little wierd

I agree completely.  If I were Texas I would already be looking into trading Hamilton--though they might not get much of a return.  I have to believe some teams see him as a ticking time bomb.
