Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Josh Hamilton

After his most recent relapse, the Rangers put their extension talks with Josh Hamilton on hold. Despite the way the Rangers have supported Hamilton through two public relapses, the former MVP said he doesn't feel like he owes the team and doesn't expect an extension before the end of the season, when he can become a free agent.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Hamilton had this to say (via the Fort Worth Star-Tribune):
"The Rangers have done a lot for me, but I've got a question for ya'll: Have I done a lot for the Rangers?" Hamilton said. "I think I've given them everything I've had, and I don't think anybody can say I haven't. When it comes down to it, what people don't understand, is this is a business.

"I love Texas, I love my fans, I love the fans of the Rangers, I love the organization, I love my teammates, I love everything about it. But I'm not going to sit here and say I owe the Rangers, because I don't feel like I owe the Rangers."
I have a good friend who is a Rangers fan and she's not happy with the comments, and I can see how Rangers fans would feel that way. On the other hand, he's been paid to do a job and he's done it. If the Rangers weren't happy with him or his ability to do it, they don't have to offer Hamilton a contract after the season -- I'm pretty sure someone else will. That's the beauty of the free market.

supercool, if I was a heroin addict and alcoholic and they let me keep my job and pay me an insane amount of money in spite of it...yah, I would feel like I owed my workplace something

I'm pretty sure you aren't as productive so it doesn't matter......

for this player, it is a two way street.  they both owe each other.  the rangers should pony up a nice chunk of change, but at the same time, hamilton needs to recognize that the team has gone over and above.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

He missed alot of "earning baseball dollar years" during his own demise. He will be 31 in May and he has to be looking for that one big payday. That is the way the system works. Unfortunately for him next winters free agents probably will get less due to the new CBA.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Baseball is one of the funniest sports/businesses in existence.  There is sooo much bad PR I can hardly believe it.

Josh owes the Rangers nothing.

Josh should not have said publicly that he feels he owe the Rangers nothing.

It is un-fuc*ing real to me that managers and players make non-optimum comments about each other *publicly* at any time.  It does nothing but give player, managers, and organizations a bad reputation.  And the awful part is, it's nearly impossible to shake a bad reputation.  Once you have seemed bad once, it's all but impossible to fully reclaim your goodness in a public forum.  It's the same mechanism like when a person lies to you, it's very difficult to ever trust 100% again.

And what's rough about that is that nearly all of these players and managers are good people, just like you and me.  And they make mistakes and think and say foolish things sometimes like you and me.  But they same them PUBLICLY!  LOL!  Ridiculous.

Stupid or silly comments said publicly belong to the WWE, because we know it's all a show.  They have no place in any true competitive sport or business.

They all need to watch Bull Durham again....for real.

1) We gotta play 'em one day at a time.
2) I'm just happy to be here. Hope I can help the ballclub.
3) I just want to give it my best shot, and the good Lord willing, things will work out.

I say, "This writer owes us an apology."

Nice article.  An out of context quote and a reaction from a female friend.  Hey author, if you don't like your first name, don't use it.  Just go by Trent.  Don't try to make your name all sophisticated by just using your first initial and then write this meaningless garbage.

Rangers didnt give him a second chance..the Reds did. Im convinced Hamilton would've been just as good with Cincy had he not been traded years back.

He's 100 percent right on about this.
