Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Josh Hamilton

By C. Trent Rosecrans

After his most recent relapse, the Rangers put their extension talks with Josh Hamilton on hold. Despite the way the Rangers have supported Hamilton through two public relapses, the former MVP said he doesn't feel like he owes the team and doesn't expect an extension before the end of the season, when he can become a free agent.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Hamilton had this to say (via the Fort Worth Star-Tribune):
"The Rangers have done a lot for me, but I've got a question for ya'll: Have I done a lot for the Rangers?" Hamilton said. "I think I've given them everything I've had, and I don't think anybody can say I haven't. When it comes down to it, what people don't understand, is this is a business.

"I love Texas, I love my fans, I love the fans of the Rangers, I love the organization, I love my teammates, I love everything about it. But I'm not going to sit here and say I owe the Rangers, because I don't feel like I owe the Rangers."
I have a good friend who is a Rangers fan and she's not happy with the comments, and I can see how Rangers fans would feel that way. On the other hand, he's been paid to do a job and he's done it. If the Rangers weren't happy with him or his ability to do it, they don't have to offer Hamilton a contract after the season -- I'm pretty sure someone else will. That's the beauty of the free market.

Too all of the fans complaining about Hamilton's comments, let me ask you a question. Do you feel like you owe your place of employment something? Enough said.

"Everyone remember this... It is a mutually- supportive relationship.  Texas stood by Josh, and has helped him to recover and thrive on the field."

Actually, I think the Reds are the ones who helped Hamilton recover. They took a shot on him when no one else would. Texas just reaped the rewards.

It was idiotic of the Rangers to stop extension talks because of the drinking incident.

You're right, he didn't kill the fan... to put it in his words shortly after the accident: "God has a plan"

He didnt kill anybody Jtizzle.  That fan made an ill fated attempt at catching a $5 souvenier, risking his life in the process.  did he put a gun to that fellas head?  NO.  Ive been at the ballpark where something similiar happened; however the person didnt go head first and plunge to their death - they decided the risk wasnt worth the reward.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Risk/Reward, Josh Hamilton is all that and more. There is not one manager in the league that would tell Josh "No we don't want you" injury risk, alcohol and all, find me one with the moral terpitude to send a potential MVP candidate packing. I think Josh owes the rangers respect for giving him a new chance and trading for him, but respect is not a debt that you pay openly, like a discount for services. As a business man, Hamilton will do his due dilligence and listen to the rangers first, if they send him an offer first, if not, he will listen to whomever wishes to pay him, and every single team that thinks they can afford him, will try, and they will all be willing to pay for a "watchdog" or moral compass to follow him around and help. Do you change the tires on your car? the oil? taking care of your mazzerati is an expensive venture. And while Hamilton is maybe not the mazzerati anymore he is very very close. Even the Rangers understand that. The ranger fans, I get it, I would be mad too, but I'd be more mad if he doesn ot get offered enough to come back next year......Just sayin....
