Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Josh Hamilton

By C. Trent Rosecrans

After his most recent relapse, the Rangers put their extension talks with Josh Hamilton on hold. Despite the way the Rangers have supported Hamilton through two public relapses, the former MVP said he doesn't feel like he owes the team and doesn't expect an extension before the end of the season, when he can become a free agent.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Hamilton had this to say (via the Fort Worth Star-Tribune):
"The Rangers have done a lot for me, but I've got a question for ya'll: Have I done a lot for the Rangers?" Hamilton said. "I think I've given them everything I've had, and I don't think anybody can say I haven't. When it comes down to it, what people don't understand, is this is a business.

"I love Texas, I love my fans, I love the fans of the Rangers, I love the organization, I love my teammates, I love everything about it. But I'm not going to sit here and say I owe the Rangers, because I don't feel like I owe the Rangers."
I have a good friend who is a Rangers fan and she's not happy with the comments, and I can see how Rangers fans would feel that way. On the other hand, he's been paid to do a job and he's done it. If the Rangers weren't happy with him or his ability to do it, they don't have to offer Hamilton a contract after the season -- I'm pretty sure someone else will. That's the beauty of the free market.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

If Hamilton owes any organization it's the Reds who gave him another chance.

Before one of their numerous pathetic trades.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

I guess he's right in saying he doesn't owe the Rangers anything, but on the other hand the Rangers don't owe him anything either.  And if I were running the Rangers I'd say, "good-bye Josh, good luck and thanks for you time here, but we can spend the kind of money you're wanting on someone else just as valuable and one whole lot less risky."  End of story.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

If he gave 100 percent every time he played, and he did not get suspended or hurt the team, then he earned his paycheck, and he does not owe them anything. He busted his tail, won an MVP. He is right - he owes nothing to anyone

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Hamilton has had alcohol about as many times in the last 4 years as many of his teammates have had in one week. Rangers people are making it seem like Hamilton's two drinking incidents have ruined his career and the team's image.  It was a writer on cbssports.com that suggested that Hamilton owed the Rangers a one-year contract. I believe this type talk is what Hamilton is referring to when he says that he doesn't owe them anything.  If Hamilton ever owed anybody anything, it was the Tampa Bay Devil Rays who wasted their 1st overall pick on him, tons of Bonus money, and tons of time and effort.  And guess what?  Hamilton sincerely apologized to the entire organtization years ago for all of the trouble he put them through. Apology accepted.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

In most cases, I would agree with Hamilton, but in this case, I do not. The Rangers took a chance on Hamilton when he was trying to overcome his personal problems. Hamilton has not had an injury free season since he has played with the Rangers. He has had his moments, and not all of them are memorable. Hamilton's showing in the home run derby is probably his most remembered accomplishment on the playing field. He has no World Series ring, has relapsed a couple of times that we know of, and feels that he owes nothing to the Rangers? The way of the game now, hardly any loyalty i the game between players and their teams. I guess it is not a big deal, but Texas will compete with or without Hamilton. Life goes on.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Booter,  my point was not about  Ranger fans,  its about the fans of baseball in general,  he has a career and the owners have a product, because of the fans.  I could careless if Hamilton signs with the Rangers,  but the word Loyality is lost.  Owners could careless, and the players could careless.  All I was trying to say was that the real fans, kids (or the kid in some adults), who push their dad to take them to game to watch an athlete play in their home town, thinks their is loyality, that the player wants to be their.  The game is more to them, then a guy like you.  I am sure at 10 or so you didnt have a favorite player on your favorite team,  the only thing that counted to you was batting average, rehab and you could careless unless they won.   In the real world its not like that,  they dont want to be idols,  but yet most kids strive to be pro athletes, like their hero!   Hamilton dont owe the Rangers a damn thing,  but he does owe the game.  of course the obvious comeback from a guy like you, its only about the money made and he rakes it in with his home runs and skill.   Wow, no one could figure that out,  again Loyality and honor is lost not only in sports, but this country!!

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Everyone has some kind of addiction even if you don't admit to it. Josh doesn't try to lie is way out of his problems, he is honest with eveyone when he slips. Why is it that so many people can casll Josh names? I would bet that most of them live i glass houses. I don't think that the Rangers would have been to even one World Series  without Josh. Ranger fans know what a jerk is, we had to put up with A-Rod here for a few years. A-rod is one who thinks his suff don't stink, Josh doesn't think he his above everuyone else, he is an average person with money, and he is a man of faith. I for one hope that the Rangers have him for years to come.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

Josh Hamilton does not owe the Rangers anything because baseball is a business but he should respect what they have done for him. He should know better then to say " he does not owe them anything". I would assume unless he has a big rebound from last year and stays healthy his suitors would be minimal for someone with his baggage. Star power does not last for ever so i hope he comes to his senses.

Hamilton says he doesn't 'owe the Rangers'

By the way, the Reds gave him a "second chance" - not the Rangers.
