Bobby Valentine

By C. Trent Rosecrans

There'll be no beer in the Red Sox clubhouse this season, but fried chicken is presumably safe.

New manager Bobby Valentine told reporters on Saturday that he told the team alcohol would not be permitted in the clubhouse.

"The rules are not to embarrass themselves or the team, the community, their teammates," Valentine said (via WEEI.com). "I don't think that's a new rule. That's a longstanding rule of life. There's no beer in the clubhouse or on the last leg of road trips."

Valentine said he didn't allow alcohol in the clubhouse when he managed the Mets.

Boston's September collapse was symbolized by starting pitchers drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz said he supported Valentine's new policy.

"We're not here to drink. We're here to play baseball," David Ortiz said (via the Boston Herald). "It ain't no bar."

Valentine noted 19 other teams don't allow alcohol in the clubhouse, including the Mets, Yankees and Cardinals. St. Louis banned alcohol in the clubhouse after the 2007 death of pitcher Josh Hancock.

How about whore's? Maybe a good BJ would benifit the team. If Big Papi is really that big, then the Rex Sox wont be the only ones choking!

Whatever makes the Redsox feel better, or spins best in the media....but the fact is, beer didn't make the Redsox collapse last year....Theo forgot the pitching...that's what made the Redsox collapse....

Blaming starting pitchers drinking a beer on an off day they wouldn't pitch in, is about as weak as blaming Francona. It was all about hiding Theo Epstein's ability to spend the 2nd most money in MLB on a roster, and still somehow forget the pitching... and spinning  blame as a distraction while he made his escape to the Cubs.

Bobby V thought Rey Ordonez was ready too. How'd that work out? He never hit over .258. Granted he was the best feilding SS I have ever seen.

If the players didn’t realize that there was a new Sherriff
in town when Bobby V was first hired then they sure knew when they got to camp.

Bobby V for the first time in his MLB managing career has been
given a team that has this much talent. He is not going to waste this
opportunity of a lifetime.

One thing no one can ever take away from Bobby V is that he
is a great talent evaluator.  In Texas
people were writing how great Oddibe McDowell was going to be.  Bobby V said one year you will never again see
him as good as he is today.  He was right.  If the young SS is named the starting SS (and
I think it is his job to loose in spring training) it is because he is deemed
ready by Valentine and you can take to the bank he will perform.

They say that a good manager can steal his team 5 games a
year and Bobby V can do that for Boston.
I believe if he had been the manager last season they would have made
the play off as it stood they were only one game behind Tampa when the season
closed.
