Bobby Valentine

There'll be no beer in the Red Sox clubhouse this season, but fried chicken is presumably safe.

New manager Bobby Valentine told reporters on Saturday that he told the team alcohol would not be permitted in the clubhouse.

"The rules are not to embarrass themselves or the team, the community, their teammates," Valentine said (via WEEI.com). "I don't think that's a new rule. That's a longstanding rule of life. There's no beer in the clubhouse or on the last leg of road trips."

Valentine said he didn't allow alcohol in the clubhouse when he managed the Mets.

Boston's September collapse was symbolized by starting pitchers drinking beer and eating fried chicken in the clubhouse during games.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz said he supported Valentine's new policy.

"We're not here to drink. We're here to play baseball," David Ortiz said (via the Boston Herald). "It ain't no bar."

Valentine noted 19 other teams don't allow alcohol in the clubhouse, including the Mets, Yankees and Cardinals. St. Louis banned alcohol in the clubhouse after the 2007 death of pitcher Josh Hancock.

Red Sox ban alcohol in the clubhouse

This is silly and a reaction to what happened last year.  There is nothing wrong with having a beer or two after work.  Its very common-place in America for workers to stop offf for a drink after a day's work.  So instead of having a beer in the clubhouse after the game they will head to a bar and then who knows what kind of trouble.  Its better to drink in the clubhouse where the team can monitor the drinking.

Bobby V is the perfect guy to manage this team. He will end up well liked by his players, even guys like Beckett, because he will have that team regain the respect they pissed away last September.

I am an Angel fan, and have been so since the inception of the team...As a So Cal sports fan I have no love for the Boston teams,  I gotta say I'm a little worried about the Sox now that Valentine is at the helm.  With his discipline and experience, I can see the Red Sox winning it all this year. The Angel's and Pujols will battle the Sox for the American League pennant next fall.

This will not go over well... no more beer and chicken during games?? How will they cope and drown their sorrows when they miss the playoffs again. I guess they could just bring in some stippers and blow instead... or is that against the rules too.

Alcohol restricts blood flow and slows reflexes. No wonder they collapsed last September! Jeez, talk about the inmates running the asylum. Give 'em hell, Bobby!
