Bobby Valentine

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Well, earlier Monday former Red Sox manager Terry Francona said the Red Sox ban on alcohol in the clubhouse was a "PR move." Current Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine didn't give a "PR" or "PC" response.

"Remember," Valentine told reporters, including the Boston Herald's Scott Lauber, "you're getting paid over there for saying stuff. You get paid over here for doing stuff. I've done both."

It should be noted, Francona's done both too -- and has two more rings than Valentine.

Valentine continued -- "How was it PR?" he asked. "It means like 20 teams are looking for PR and that's why they're making good decisions."

Valentine did say he had the same rule in his last big-league managerial job with the Mets.

With ESPN's penchant to overblow everything Red Sox and Francona on its payroll, it's safe to say this won't be the last time Francona is asked about a Boston controversy -- and Valentine will object to whatever is said. Valentine is always entertaining, and with Francona in his new gig and a microscope on both, there should be plenty of fun for onlookers this season.

It IS a PR move because the Dead Flops didn't (and apparently can't) rid themselves of the troublemakers in the clubhouse. Booby V shouldn't be worrying about Francona... he needs to watch his back IN his clubhouse.

Never could stand FranComa even though I love the Sox. He was served great teams on a silver platter and a truly great manager would have won more than twice and almost anyone of the street would have two rings with those players. He just watched the games and the players did whatever they pleased.

Bobby V needs to not worry about Francona and worry about winning a championship ring.  Red Sox do not spend that money for anything less.  Francona, regardless of circumstances, deservers props for winning 2 world series rings which is more then any other red sox manager can say in the last 90 years.

I listened to Mike and Mike this morning, Francona didn't take any shots he just called it as it is.  Why else would the Red Sox need to publicly announce they banned beer in the clubhouse?  Did the other 20 clubs make public announcements?  Is it good for PR - yes it is.  Bobby V should just accept it, Francona called it how it is and it wasn't a diss on Bobby V.

All boston teams, patriots Spygate Superbowls and Roid Socks cheat with roids.

Francona a STIFF

Francona has always been a STIFF.  My 12 year old kid could have won those two WS with teams that he had, just like Casey Stengel won EIGHT of them with the YANKEES while he slept in the dugout.  He is also unprofessional for criticizing the person who replaced him and by using his current position to attack Valentin (who I really dont care for that much, either, but he is right in this situation).  I would be far more aggressive in attacking Francona if I were Valentin, but he is walking on eggs because he hasnt won anything yet and is not likely to do so with all those holes in his lineup and a shaky pitching staff.

Hudsonhawk -- yes!!!  You are on the correct trolley my friend.
Look at those Texas teams Bobby V had from 1986-92 for example.
Other popular managers like Torre, Cox, Leyland, Larussa, heck, or Francona wouldn't have won divisions with those teams.

And for the writer to state:
It should be noted, Francona's done both too -- and has two more rings than Valentine.
Come on.  You might as well say, "It should be noted that Francona is taller."
Terrible line.

If I were the Red Sox president, I would blame Theo more than Francona.
If you were Larry Lucchino, you would be inherently evil to begin with, so placing blame on anyone for anything would be merely arbitrary so long as yourself and John Henry saved face.

Nothing like trying to heal an organization by getting into a schoolyard shouting match with the former, and far superior manager. Letting Francona go was a huge mistake, hiring Bobby V is a disaster.
I'd hardly call this a "schoolyard shouting match". All year the media will try to make something out of every quote by Francona and Valentine, with cbssports being no exception despite Rosencrans' insanely hypocritical potshot as ESPN, which others have already pointed out.

Bobby V had two choices-- either ban alcohol from this dysfunctional clubhouse or set up a chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous.
