Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

go Bobby go ... Let's see if you can cycle through your routine in record time!
Putting Bobby V in charge of a team is like putting the team on uppers - things start off seeming like it is all going to be great - but then the intensity catchs up - and the whole thing begins to crash.
Have fun with this circus Boston! It will be a race between getting to the WS - and Bobby getting fired!

I would not call it a swipe. He was telling it like it is. Besides, lets not forget at the very least it starts to make the games even more exciting. WE know whatever Bobby V says this year, he will upset the team he manages or the team he will be playing. In the past two days he has ruffled more feathers than Tito did all last year. ell until he said banning the Buds was a PR move. It was but who will admit it, not Bobby. Let us all sit back and enjoy a sport that needs some excitement to catch up to the last years endings and playoffs.

If Bobbie was as good as he thinks he is he would have been manageing instead of talking on ESPN nor would he have had to go to Japan to manage a team. Bobbie is bush and writes checks with his mouth that his a$$ can't cash. Boston hired him as a PR move because they won't be a player in the AL this year.

Bobby V was a tool with the Mets and he's still a tool. saying Giambi would have been out anyway if jeter didn't flip is asinine.  The throw was losing steam and off-line.

Bottom line - Jeter is a winner.  Bobby V can only win in Japan.

Why doesn't he just worry about his washed up loser fried chicken beer swilling dugout collapsing ass team instead of talking about something he knows nothing about...good baseball. He is a senile old has never been loser trying to draw interest into that sorry ass team and keep his worthless ass relevant. See you on ESPN panel when you prove you can't manage again. Don't worry you can always go back to Japan with your beaten down tail between your legs again you sorry ass loser.

Valentine really sucked as a commentator.  Now he really sucks as a commentator pretending to be a manager!  Common sense dictates that he focus on unifying his undisciplined team not deflecting criticism on to the Yanks.  Maybe he thinks that's a default defense reaction for Redsox Nation but it's not really a valid strategy to turn his team around.
