Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

Workin out real well so far hey Chowder nation??  Bobby V is gonna blow up just like the pitching staff.  You`ll see plenty of the Yankees Bobby & I`d work real hard on cut offs since you don`t have a stinkin short stop!!!  Your LF`s arm is a noodle assuming he`s healthy or motivated enough to try and have a better year 2 in Beantown.  All those Mets memories Bobby...get the rubber nose & glasses out...taht`s still in the playbook right?

Lame as all hell for Bobby V to go clear back to 2001 and 2004 to talk trash.  Feeble.  No class.  (BTW, how brave of Varitek to fight with his full catchers gear on, woo woo.  Arod could clean his clock.)

How long will it take Valentine to wear out his welcome in Boston?  He'll get fired, nothing new for managers, and then he'll have 5 of something, 5 firings.

jeter only makes that play because the grease ball giambi was more worried about being signed by the yankees that next winter and didn't want to score that important run and slowed up. jeter has been a great player for a long time and hopefully will continue to be the starting SS for the yankees for the next 3 - 4 years and make many more historic plays!

That wasn't very nice.  Now he seems like one of those senile old dudes.  Why must Bobby confirm these things??

<<"We'll never practice that": Of course not, you dickhead!  THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT--Jeter made a classic play that went beyond the robotic 'by the book' mentality of a Valentine,>> waynelee

Really?  But Jeter SAID that he practiced that play ... which, if you read Valentine's comments, actually WAS his point.  We all know it sounded ridiculous then, and it sounds equally ridiculous now.  If you think Bobby V manages by the book, then I doubt you've watched him manage very much.  You may be a Bobby V hater, but it seems you pretty much struck out on all the points in your comment now, didn't you?

Alright I've already had enough of this clown. I'm glad he didnt coach for such a long time, I forgot how much of a tool he truly is. Play the game on the field bobby v not thru the media. This guy is supposed to be a role model and a coach? Lol. I respect real coaches even more now that shut up and play ball.

>"We'll never practice that": Of course not, you dickhead!  THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT--Jeter made a classic play that went beyond the robotic 'by the book' mentality of a Valentine, which is why is in a super category, and a winner, as Sobby V. will never be.<

No, YOU'RE missing the point, which is that Jeter said that he practiced that play and Bobby V. is saying he doesn't believe that and neither do I.  Nobody practices that.

Go back to Japan you POS.

Jeter is a 1st ballot Hall of Famer.

Valentine is only famous for that big fat yap. He hasn't earned the right to comment on someone of Jeter's stature. He's suspect.
