Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

Hey Bobby V..........worry about your team and your 3rd or 4th place finish this year. Your a big ass for mentioning that Jeter play because if you knew what you were talking about the ball was not coming to Posada and Jeters instincts took over.

Learn early Bobby V...These are the Yankees and we play ball to win.

its funny to hear him out his 2 cents into the rivalry...he really hasnt been relevant for a while and probablay wont be anytime soon. his "ban" on beer in the clubhouse is laughable. really they will find a way to get a beer if they want one ..just like francona said. how about his track record as a manager. what has he ever done that was relevant? his blasting jeter is once again laughable. arod i might be able to comprehend because you either like him or you dont. think the sox wouldve been better retaining franacona than hiring a veteran manager who will eventually alienate some of the veterans who will tune him out. i dont recall valentine winnng any rings either as a manager in ny or wherever he has managed. he should stick to figuring out who is in his rotation and leave jeters name out of his mouth...

I remember when AROD was slumping and complaining about being hit and Varitek said "we don't throw at .230 hitters".  Good for Bobby.  IT's about time someone called out these two.

Two things for certain about new Red Sox Bobby Valentine...one is, you don't win any games with your mouth. Two, why insult both Yankees players Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez. Do you really want to fuel that fire? Has Valentine won any World Series rings? How many has Jeter won? A few more, yes, that's right. Of course you'll never practice that, as the baseball coach and player said...Jeter was in the worng position, he should have been at 2nd base. He just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Did it make a difference? We'll never know...had Jeremy Giambi slid, it might have made a difference as well. Another thing we'll never know...

I absolutely love how all these Yankmee fans such as  continue to bring up drinking in the clubhouse as if it doesnt happen anywhere else. Even in clubhouses where it is banned, it still happens.

Now you Yankmee fans need to get off your high horse. I guess you dont recall a few years back when Clemens and Giambi were drinking beer ON THE BENCH DURING A GAME!! I believe Giambi called it his "protein shake". But I guess more importantly, it WASN'T in the clubhouse.

Yes I am serious. Whether you want to accept it is up to you. There was a piggy back cutoff. Both the 2nd baseman and 1st baseman were inline for the relay. It just so happens that there was an overthrow. Jeter had absolutely no business being where he was. And if you look at the replay closer, you will notice that from the onset of the play he was no where near 2nd base where he should have been. And get a clue about a looping hail mary. If any right fielder threw a looping hail mary from that short distance, you can guarantee he will never play right field in the majors again! It was an overthrow! I too have played and coached for more than 20 years. And if you played and coached for 24 years, you must not be too good at it if you dont know that Jeter should have been at 2nd base waiting for a possible play over there.

And as for diving in the stands, YES it was theatrics. I didnt say it was intentional theatrics and he did it to make it look good. He had no choice but to dive into the stands as if he didnt he surely would have hurt himself on the wall. But that doesnt mean the catch was better than it was. It was honestly a routine play by a shortstop cutting over and making the play.

And one final thing....if you think Varitek ever juiced, then you are about and dumb as a bag of rocks!
