Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

Bobby V. takes swipes at A-Rod, Jeter

I'm starting to think that Bobby Valentine should return to Japan and learn something about honor and humility.

When you leave the broadcast booth, it appears you also leave tact and diplomacy behind. No wonder he was a color commentator for years. Looks like Bobby won't be asking anyone on the Yankees to be his valentine anytime soon.

Wow, Tek did not smack A-Rod or beat him up or do anything but grab A-Rods face while he wasn't ready for it and A-Rod grabbed back. Nobody won it and Valentine is an idiot to say as much and is just trying to get Boston fans to like him. To call Jeter out on that play was ever more pathetic and to the clown who says Jeters dive into the stands was theatrical, you need to get your head out of your ass. I don't like the Yankees at all but Jeter I respect and like and he is one of the greatest shortstops and players in MLB history, as is A-Rod. Don't run your mouth Bobby just win some games on the field for us and we will have your back. We don't need you to say stupid things, just win us a World Series and keep the mouth shut.

Tek smacking that bitch was such a great moment it must of felt so good . Im a Sox fan but i gotta say Jeter is one of the all time greats and what makes those plays so impressive is that Jeter isnt that good of a shortstop. Bobby V. can call Ted Williams a cunt just as long as he wins ballgames.

I understand what he is trying to do. He is trying to pull a Rex Ryan and lite a fire under his team. Trouble is just like Sexy Rexy he does not have the pulse of the team and is writing checks his players can't cash. Watch Yankees smack the Red Sox around and have Red Sox lose that elimination wild card game to miss the playoffs yet again. This whole Valentine experiment is destined to be a disaster.

Valentine.....wow....what the cat drag in?   He reminds me of the little bastard kid that just wants to get under your nerves and drive you crazy.  He is a good coach, a funny man and well that is all I know.

Thank you Bobby V for finally exposing the morst over-rated play in baseball history!!! Giambi would have been out by a good step if Jeter didn't slow down the throw to the plate by cutting off a perfect throw by Shane Spencer and stealing his glory. It was a bad play by Jeter to cut that throw off and now people will finally start to realize it.  His leap into the stands was also over hyped as he didn't need to go into the stands after he caught that ball. Just Jeter being Jeter and trying to make himself bigger than the team.
