Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

Bobby V. takes swipes at A-Rod, Jeter

Rho26des........

Are you serious?  First of all, with regards to Jeter being "out of position"......the throw from the outfield was a looping hail-mary which was obvious from the time it left the right fielder's hand that it was going to be over the head of both cut-off men (2B man and 1B man).  Jeter recognized this (as could anyone who actually watched the play live that has any clue about baseball)....he then ran to where he thought the ball would land.  The rest, as they say, is history!  His instincts told him where to go.....not "being in position".  At the point the ball was obviously going over the cut-off men, the batter was clearly going to make it to 2nd base (where Jeter would have been considered "in position").  There was no sense standing on 2B to await a throw that was never going to 2B.  I've played and coached organized baseball for 24 years, given the game situation, standing on 2B with his thumb up his butt would have constituted being "out of position".

As for "diving" into the stands after the catch......I agree his momentum prevented him from stopping.  But to say he dove face first into a molded plastic seat with steel frames for "theatrics" is about as ridiculous as saying Manny and Big Poopi were the only two Red Sux "juicing" on the 04 & 07 teams ('cause you can bet the farm there were more...no doubt led by your esteemed retiring "captain"!).

This was "Bobby V being Bobby V" to put it lingo you Red Sux fans can relate to.  This was nothing more than an average manager trying to deflect the attention away from the fact he's never accomplished much as a Major League manager. But hey, given the fact the Red Sux will be mired in 4th most of the season, I'd expect a lot thread posting from you all.....you'll have nothing better to do!

OK, Valentine shooting his mouth off prior to preseason. Who does he think he is, Rex Ryan?? This is a load of crap. Bobby V is a clown that will be fired before the end of the season. Francona was a better manager than this clown. Thanks Red Sox management, your pain will be our gain!!!!!
In my opinion Valentine is just giving the media something to write about, the best way not to be ask question on a subject you don't want to talk about. Is to create a new story that put the media focus on Valentine, I think that Valentine know what he doing and that is making himself a bigger story then the team.

Bobby V. takes swipes at A-Rod, Jeter

Bobby V. starting to jerk himself in the press with - "nothing".

Vartitek was done when old homeboy knuckler called it quits.....so it was a no decision on Vartiek, but more of a "they do not want me now."....BE REAL.

Varitek took cheap shot on Gay-Rod with the mitt to the face.  Heck take the glove off and go at it.....that would be more real.

Bobby V. can mess with the Japanese mentality and the camera that glares on him in the studio, but it is another world on the field....he has the experience - but lacks anything that makes the great managers great.

His level is best and not great, so let's be real and give the guy a couple of years......for he has his hands full in the AL East.

Picking on Jeter is too easy , the only people that are in denial that he isn't Gay are yankee fans. Come on late 30's no wife, no kids ? He has his own perfume. (ha ha) but hey without being a fruit and his ballerina lessons he would not have been able to perawet and make that play.
The only gay player of note is Mike Piazza. Jeter last danced like a ballerina when the Yanks beat the Muts in 2000 in shea stadium. Mets fans should be seen and not heard. Are you kidding? you guys are going nowhere for at least the next 10 years with Fred and little Jeffey at the helm.

Bobby V. takes swipes at A-Rod, Jeter

Not that I am a huge fan of Bobby V cause I am not......yet. However, he only said what myself and many others have been saying for years. Anyone who has ever played baseball can confirm what he said. Was Jeter out of position? ABSOLUTELY!! A shortstop has no business being where he was on that play. In baseball, every single player has something to do and some place to be on every single play. And Jeter's place to be was not where he was. He should have been at 2nd base in case there was a play there. But none the less, he did make an amazing play. Would the Yankees have gotten Giambi out if Jeter wasnt where he was? In my opinion....probably not but looking at the replay, it would have been pretty damn close. But it is impossible to say so there is no point debating it. Now concerning his "dive into the stands to make the catch". He already made the catch and took several steps before diving into the stands. Was is a good play? Yes it was. Was it a great play? Absolutely not. He went into the stands because his momentum took him into the stands after he caught the ball. It was definitley more theatrics than anything. It was an average play for a shortstop going towards fould ground to make a play. Nothing more.

Now I know will catch grief I am sure because I am a Red Sox fan and people will say that I only say this about these plays because I am a Red Sox fan. But I will say that Jeter is a legend, a great player and a class act. And he will definitely be a well deserving Hall of Famer.

Say what you want Coney...Elias has the 2011 Sox down as the worst collapse in the history of MLB!

That's enough for me...Elias has more facts than you have lies!

Further...the Empire won a championship since that time.

The Sox are freshly off this latest of EPIC COLLAPSES!

WANNABEES!
