Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

I wonder what Bobby would be saying about the flip if he was still on Baseball Tonight. He is and always was a master bs'er. He is trying to make himself bigger than the team all while saying he is taking pressure of his team. Bobby loves the attention the same way his idol Lasorda did. Get ready for a long season Boston. You did not know how good you had it with Francona.

I remember the cheap shot Varitek took at ARod and I remember ARod getting in a couple of shots on Variteks numb skull.  Even caught off guard Jason could not get ARod to the ground.  I'd say in a dust up Alex busts Jason a new hole everytime.  This is why I will never respect the Red Sox organization.  Bobby V needs to win something before he starts degrading two Yankee greats that have more talent between them than he's coached his entire career.  At least hes banned beer from the clubhouse so the the Sox players are going to have to hang out in the parking lot for a couple of cool ones now.  What a joke!  Just walk through the club house during the game once in a while and see whats going on.  Better yet announce to the team no more drinking or KFC during the game period.  Be a mans man and fine the guys that don't comply.

Bobby V. takes swipes at A-Rod, Jeter

Kind of funny, I remember last year about this time everyone ripping on Elsbury and how overated he was.  Remember what he did in 2011?  Now all these jealous people that talk all this BS about the Red Sox.  Bobby V is a great guy and will handle the Sox this year, it's what they needed.  Francona WAS a great manager but things got out of control and it was time to part.  Now for the new GM, so far he's useless but, It was time for Theo to move on.  The Spankies will be tough to beat but again, everyone will watch them battle it out in the end.  SOX ROX, WATCH!

Reese's catch was in foul ground. If Jeter doesn't make that catch, It's a hit and the Yankees literally lose right there.

They don't get Giambi at the plate if Jeter doesn't make that flip. Even if you say the ball was moving faster than he flipped it, which it really wasn't, Posada's tag was lightning quick, he wouldn't have got him if he had to reach across his body and backhand the ball off the ground.

what does that mean? I am from Detroit; we are not fighting here with masks on! Your boy Varitek is a sissy.  And certainly has no "true grit"!

I wonder if he recalls how the Yankees beat him in the 2000 world series when he was the mets manager.  Or maybe he thought the mets were in control when they were down two games to one.  Clown.
