Bobby ValentineBy C. Trent Rosecrans

Somewhere in Bobby Valentine's office, there may be a checklist of people he should insult.

Monday, it was his predecessor with the Red Sox and Tuesday it's his rival, the Yankees. First on the list of Yankees to tweak? Alex Rodriguez, second was Derek Jeter.

When discussing retiring Boston catcher Jason Varitek, Valentine took a swipe at A-Rod. In a list of positives about Varitek, Bobby V. noted "he beat up Alex," referring to the 2004 dustup between the two.

Then, while discussing his team's work on relays and cutoffs, he dared blast Jeter's famous flip in Game 2 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the A's.

"We'll never practice that," Valentine told reporters (via the Boston Herald). "I think [Jeter] was out of position. I think the ball gets [Jeremy Giambi] out if [Jeter] doesn't touch it, personally. That was amazing that he was there. I bet it's more amazing that he said he practiced it. I don't believe it."

Would the ball have gotten there in time without Jeter's help? Looking back on it, it may have been closer than I'd remembered. I'm still not sure it had enough juice to get there on its own.

I'm surprised while he's at it, he doesn't bring up that in the same game where Jeter made his famous diving catch in the stands in 2004, Pokey Reese made a similar, but superior, play earlier int he game. (If you don't remember, Reese's catch was similar, but he went further and made the catch closer to the wall -- he just lacked Jeter's theatrics and his team didn't win that game).

We knew before this that Valentine was an idiot, this just confirms it. Hopefully he and the Red Sox tank the next several years.

A nobody blogger validates a genius manager whom likes to make a mockery of baseball. Wow!! I can see his comments about A-Rod because he has many haters. I think A-Rod was correct in defending himself because he was getting hit by so many pitches that season and the Red Sox were on top of the list. Varitek was the aggressor on that play because A-Rod never left the dirt area. Varitek clearly socked A-Rod in the face with his mitt and that makes Valentine look like an idiot by saying Varitek beat up A-Rod even if it was a joke. Derick Jeters back flip was sensational and one of the most crucial fielding plays of all time. Suggesting anything else is really childish and i do not think Derrick would care. Rosecrans said he thought Jeters diving catch into the stands was theatrics. Reese came away unscathed and Jeter came away with a gash.

And if Giambi had slide into home instead of standing up he would have been safe, no way the tag could have been made on him.

The funniest thing is saying Varitek beat up A-Rod. Real tough guy goes fter someone and keeps his mask on. varitek is a punk who should have retired 5 years ago. Also, no way in hell that ball gets to the plate without Jeter that game against oakland. valentine should have stayed in japan.

I already hate Valentine more that I did when he was the Mets manager.  He is such a pr**k.   I can't stomach him already-- he hasn't managed in 10 years and hasn't won a game yet and he's already insulted half of his team and the Yankees.   I hope the Red Sox have another epic collapse this year just so he can eat crow

What do you mean Valentine insulted Terry Francona? I don't really get that. If anything, it was Francona taking a swipe at Valentine because he is embarrassed that the beer-drinking during games took place on his watch. I do not dislike Francona, but he definitely appeared like the type of manager who lets players walk all over him. He always seemed too afraid to confront a player. I think banning beer is certainly not a big deal. How many places of business allow employees to drink on the premises while on the clock? And since players have media duties, they are on the clock after games. It shouldn't be a big ordeal for grown men who are professionals to have to wait to drink a beer until after they leave the ball park.

Bobby V is merely trying to make things interesting.  He knows the Red Sox are a 4th place team in the AL East.
