Luke Scott takes a swing at Red Sox fans

Luke Scott

By C. Trent Rosecrans

Luke Scott has never been one to shy away from his opinions, and Wednesday the former Oriole and current Ray took aim with his tongue, not his 7 1/2-foot spear.

Scott. who was injured and didn't play in the Orioles' victory over the Red Sox on the final day of the season, said his teammates were pulling for the Rays to take the final playoff spot from the Red Sox.

The reason, Scott's not a fan of the Red Sox fans. From MLB.com's Bill Chastain:
"Just their arrogance," Scott said. "The fans come in and they take over the city. They're ruthless. They're vulgar. They cause trouble. They talk about your family. Swear at you. Who likes that? When people do that, it just gives you more incentive to beat them. Then when things like [the last game of last season] happen, you celebrate even more. You go to St. Louis -- classiest fans in the game. You do well, there's no vulgarity. You know what? You don't wish them bad."
He added that the team's celebration went up a notch moments after the Orioles won when the Rays' Evan Longoria homered to knock the Red Sox out of the playoffs.
"Everybody's giving high-fives, then all of a sudden [Longoria] homers," Scott said. "Everybody's in the clubhouse and it's like, Bam! And we're like, 'Go home Boston! Pack your bags. See you next year.'"
Then on his way home, Scott even taunted Boston fans.
"It was like someone shot their dog. I rolled down the window and I'm like, 'Ah, hah, sucks doesn't it, when someone laughs or makes fun of you when things aren't going your way.'"
I'm guessing when the Rays and Red Sox play this year, the Sox fans may ratchet up their "ruthless" and "vulgar" ways.

I might actually take exception to some of Luke Scott's quotes if he were more relevant. If I were an Orioles player though, I'd be more pissed at the fact that Camden Yards turns into Fenway South every time Boston comes to town. That onus is on the Baltimore fan base (and ownership for fielding such crappy teams for the last 12 years). Also, Sox fans can admittedly be brutal but nothing close to Phillie. That place is as close as you can get to British soccer hooliganism anywhere in this continent south of Montreal.

Good points Jeff but one of the ironies of the Weaver days was the O's really didn't draw all that great, even during successful years.  I went to a playoff game in '74 against the A's and there might have been 30,000-35,000 (being charitable here) watching as Cuellar lost to Catfish Hunter 2-1 in a pitchers' duel.  Baltimore was a football city first and I think the fans took it for granted that the O's would be a winnner every year.  Attendance was great at Camden during the 90's but constant losing seasons have taken their toll.  It didn't break my heart seeing Boston miss the playoffs last season- if the O's aren't going to be there, I'd rather see the Rays win it.

As for the Phils fans, hey, just remind them that they are the all-time losingest franchise in baseball history if they get too obnoxious.  It's not even close and they have 2 world championships in 135 years of professional baseball.  Wow.

You stay classy, Luke.  I have found that taunting and name-calling is a very effective method of persuasion when dealing with vulgar fans of another team.  Most of the time they instantly recognize the error of their ways and vow to behave better in the future. And it hardly ever leads to anger or hard feelings or violence.

Luke Scott takes a swing at Red Sox fans

I'm with Luke Scott on this one. I've hated the Sox for years for one reason only: their fans. Boston undoubtedly has the worst most annoying fans in the league and it was great to see all of their arrorgant asses shut up during the epic collapse.

And Sox fans are not the worst, that goes to the Phillies fans, hands down.  Don't believe me?  Go to a Nats/Phils game in DC and tell me who's fans are the most ruthless and vulgar.

I' usually not a fan of Scott but, he has a point.  I would say however that it has more to do with the new frontrunning faithful that has claimed themselves part of RedSox Nation.  Have a number of friends who are died-in-the-wool Sox fans from NE and they're pretty good blokes.  Even they can't stand all the new Red Sox fans that have been popping up since 2004.  Of course, if the O's were still playing like they did during the Earl Weaver days, you wouldn't have to worry about Red Sox fans taking over Camden Yards.  Thank Angelos for that.
